'92 Tornado Red GT Coupe!

Featured Replies

Yeah, well I'd like to think so. the only thing that differs from the 'Fox' spec is the interior. And everything is black with the seats also featuring 'volkswagen' stitched into them in lots of different colours.

Anyway! interior not important...

Man, I love your plans. Are you keeping those wheels?

45bhp does me rightly, but not when I'm towing my bike! I wonder how much power can be squeezed out of the 1043? Hmmm..

Will be keeping these wheels for the time being, wanna swap to my mini G60's at some point. Although if these wheels were cleaned up nice i think they would look pretty good, especially when its lowered, i think they go well with the pinstripe down the side of the car!

No i can imagine towing anything in a 1.0l is a right effort  what kinda bikes do you ride?

I had many thoughts about getting more power from the 1.0l but in the end the cost outweighs the gains. The money you'd spend getting that tiny bit more power could go towards a GT if you sold your current coupe ;)

My dad got the rest of the car buffered up yesterday, was getting dark by the time it was done though so didn't get any pictures, and its overcast again today so isn't showing how the paint has come up as well as i'd like, but it looks 1000x better, chuffed with the results!

Bonnet is a little bit patchy so may get a better condition one but thats no issue, a bonnet in tornado red shouldn't be the hardest thing to find!

And i had to go and get some new bolts for the steering wheel, as 2 of the bolts that hold the boss together kept coming loose :/

Bought 4 new slightly longer bolts so they could fit locking nuts on the end and all is good again (except it still wont cancel the indicators). But fuck it cant be bothered to take it off again haha!

finally got this on the road?

Nah mate this is a different one  the other is tucked away in the garage. Couldn't resist putting a bid on this cos it was going cheap!

Well done corey, coming together. If i'm totally honest though, i love the original GT hubcap wheel combo :) really tempted to just go OEM on mine too and do the same!

  • Author

Cheers bud, it's getting there. Dans just informed me my plates have arrived too so i'm gonna get those on in a bit!

Yeah i agree on the original wheels i just wasn't keen on the massive profile, feels horrible. I'll be swapping to the mini G60's when it's lowered so its got more of a standard look!

I think you should go OEM on yours too ;) stands out more now that most GT's are modified

Went to pick up my plates just now, had some fun ( :disgust: ) trying to stick the bit of vinyl i got into the plate recess, bit crinkly at the back but doesn't matter as its hidden, couple little creases on the edges but for a couple quid i aint gonna moan!

:D

Just spotted the red mini in front of this, woah, who owns that?

That little knock under the rear light, why dont you tap it out and spray it yourself? would be very easy to do, as you can mask it off from the rest of the bodywork. coming together now!

  • Author

I will be spraying it at some point mate just haven't bought myself any tornado red yet  The dent has been straightened out now it's just that little bit off rust thats spoiling it. It doesn't line up perfectly but if you compare the recent pics of the rear end with some of the first ones, it looks loads better! But yee it's getting there :D Just wish i could afford all engine mods straight away

Mike the Mini is my Dad's, he's been rebuilding the engine over the past few months and just got it back on the road after a couple years in the garage!

Plates look smart! Where did you get them from dude?

  • Author

I ordered them through the Devon Dub Shack mate, owned by a guy called Dan down here who breaks/repairs VW's etc. but he orders them from Dubmeister so it's pretty ideal!

That vinyl looks much better! And the plates look awesome :) gonna order my set sometime this week man.

Also bet you're dad's well chuffed with the mini eh?! - btw we should definitely lower your car this week :ninja:

  • Author

Cheers bah, yeah i think the vinyl looks pretty trick, not that textured stuff like it should be but ah well! Geddon bey, fed up with your plastic ones already ay? haha!

And yeah mate he's pretty happy with it, i wish i had one

We were gonna lower it this week meht just need to borrow an electric gun off my dads mate to zip the top of the struts off, i went to get it the other day but he needed to use it yesterday and today. Gonna get it this evening hopefully and things should get rollin'...

Oh and may aswell put this pic up, Mike i nicked your idea with that lens tape  thought i'd try it out for a bit:

DSC_0281.jpg

Ah, you see, now it's LHD spec! :ninja:

Cheers for putting the video of the mini up. I've been in (and under) a couple of minis.. They are such heaps of shit, but by god I love them, and would I have one? YES.

they corner like stink to! Rubber cones for suspension? That'll do.

  • Author

Haha yeah they need to be well maintained, and it would appear majority of people couldn't be bothered to  i'd happily own one, i'd swap both polos for a mini if it wasn't a shed

They'll out corner anything with a decent set up! Were you saying they handle like shit? :?

No no, like stink...

Ha, must be a N.I. expression.

I don't know where the term comes from...

  • Author

Nah i've heard it before haha "goes like stink" etc. just thought i'd clarify

I actually thought about this earlier.

I have heard of two strokes being called 'stink wheels' because whichever two stoke oil you burn in them (Castrol R, Castrol 747, or a modern synthetic oil) they always produce a smell. (whether it's a stink or not that's up to you)

But yeah, a two stroke goes.. Espescially in comparison to Nortons and BSAs when the Japanese brought out the TZ350 yamahas.

Hence: 'Goes like stink'

So in that case, minis corner like stink. Haha. Oh Northern Ireland and it's silly dialects and sayings...

Best of luck getting her lowered this evening!

sent you a PM about the throttle body, you inbox full by any chance or have you just not been on?

After many hiccups the car is lowered! But for some reason the drivers side arch was rubbing on the tyre whenever i went over any minor little bump, don't understand why as i ran the same suspension wheels and tyres on the 1.0l :?

Anyway it still looked good so went to take a few photos

And met my mate and bought his old bonnet bra to cover up the scabs at the front of the bonnet til i get a better condition one. I've never been big on bonnet bras, but it looks better than the rust and who knows, it might grow on me:

Back to the scrubbing! Need to get my steels sprayed up and tyres swapped onto them, cos i tried one of my dads wheels off the valver on the corner in question, and no rubbing at all! Same size wheels and tyres just a slightly different offset, but it's all good cos i wanted to swap to the steelies anyway, so will be running them soon and all should be good.

So til i spray the steels I'm running on the valver alloys again:

DSC_0324.jpg

Not too keen on them on this car they looked better on the Genesis

And the valver on my wheels :p

Having a bit of a hassle with clearance on the front drivers arch still, need some questions answering if possible!?

The Audi wheels are et45, with 185/55's and scrub going over bumps, the valver wheels are et43 with 185/55's and have no clearance issues at all. So would i be right in thinking that a 2mm spacer would make the audi wheels et43? I've looked however and appears the smallest spacers are 3mm which should be fine(?), as i tried a 5mm spacer on it earlier and it only scrubbed when braking heavily over really shite bumpy road surface.

I'll be swapping my tyres onto my Mini G60's tomorrow which are also et45 so i'm hoping my spacer theory is correct? A mate luckily had an odd 3mm lying about so i'll try that tomorrow..

Also, on the Steels and Valver alloys it says 6Jx14 H2 and on the Audi's it says 6Jx14 H2B. Anybody know what that last bit means and why it's different?

And here's a pic of the steels after a quick tidy, hopefully get them on tomorrow without too much hassle!

Cheers guys, i'm sure a lot of people on here have better knowledge of wheel fitment than me :thumbsup:

Cheers mate, cleared a few things up for me!

Got the tyres on the steelies yesterday, my mate gave me 2 5mm spacers which has stopped any scrubbing so happy days!

He had a pair of 10mm spacers aswell which i'm tempted to get for the rear, but they're spaced 5mm already and i duno if i can justify buying longer bolts just for an extra 5mm

Few pics of how it is now and how the exterior will most probably stay:

Oh apart from a GT grill badge, if anybody is selling one or knows of one going let me know please? Cheers :D
