Featured Replies

but preparing for the worst and thinking bout selling the polo n keeping the golf.

but its only a 4+e box and would much prefer a proper 5 speed box back on it.

how easy / hard is it to do?

and what box's will go on with out modifications.?

will i have to change all linkage etc?

also i am thinking of changing the carb as it is a pierburg on it...anyone reccomend any other good ones ..pref with a auto choke?

What size engine in the Golf?

They had lots of different 085 gearboxes for 1.8

Replacing carb...

A well serviced Pierburg 2e2 is a thing of joy

If you want to go Weber normally a 24/25 DMTL would be the choice. but it is manual choke.

Part of the point of Weber is simplicity.

Perhaps a 34 DATR (auto choke) could be used with different throttle cable.

my golf is a 1.3 mate sorry

Any 085 will fit. My lad had a mk3 Golf 1.4 with the mk3 Polo 8P box. Went well enough.

And are all of those 5 or 4 speed and will i have to do much or get anything else to convert it to a proper 5 speed box?

Those are all 085 boxes, where 5 stands for 5 speed, I think.

You might need different reversing light switch, you can swap it without draining/refilling gearbox oil if you are quick.

Not sure what clearance the anti-roll bar has on a Golf.

Ask on a Golf forum?

I just turned my 4-speed one upside down on the Polo when I fitted an 8P instead of a GX. That lasted about year until I lowered the suspension and it wore away some of the gearbox end casing.

theres 2 types of gearbox mount aswell chaps- the 4speed came with the flat plate type mount vertical bolt i think- the polo has the later style 2 bolt horizonal. will need the mounts if so and i think the gear lever is 5 speed aswel

You don't need to change the mounts in a mk2/3 Golf as it doesn't use the same mounting position as the Polo. Use the alloy mount from the diff casing, you don't need the steel one from the upper mounts. VW stopped fitting it on the mk3 Golfs. I think you'll be OK with the reversing light switch too, but if not, it's an easy change. The Golf roll bar is at the back of the subframe, well out of the way.
