Hi folks.

So as some of you may know I'm currently in the process of buying my first house and I've encountered a financial issue.

My pay is around £840 per month and I'm looking at the following if i move out.

Outgoings £760

Incomings £840

Thats only £80 difference and I'm intending to save as much as possible in order to put money into the house. I'm also not comftable with only having £80 if stuff goes massively wrong.

I've also just been offered a moped with tax and mot by a mate for £300. Its a 50cc job and he bought it for his sister who decided against it so its just sat there.

I'm not into motorbikes or scooters so i know nothing about them but the following things are making them appealing.

£100 insurance vs £600

100MPG vs 45MPG

£15 tax vs £130 tax

That meaning i have something like £80 more a month to save/use for emergancies

The fact I'm only going to be doing 30 miles a day to and from work.

This meaning i can take the car off the road store it in the garage and come back to it when the missus finishes univeristy and moves in with a job.

I can get a CBT for £80 to ride with l plates so for under £500 i can be on the road.

The only things I'm worried about are

The fact I'm 6ft6

Being knocked off

Falling off constantly

So, do any of you guys have any experiance with mopeds?

How are they to live with?

Am i going to be almost killed 5 times a week?

Is it even possible for someone my size to use one?

Any input would be appreciated

I think if I was doing 30 miles I would go for something more than 50c, probably a learner legal 125cc. I think a 50cc would be painfully slow for that distance.

Good point. Although i haven't seen it I've been told that you can get this particular one De-restricted to 125cc and most of the roads bar 1 short 50 limit are 30s so i may be OK at 50cc. Or is it the acceleration that would cause problems. Thanks for the input.

IMO they are fucking brilliant. I've never had any experience with the limited shitty bog standard Ped but my used to do about 70 and I loved it. Brilliant on fuel, a tenner used to last me a week and that was doing something like 100+ miles a week. Liturally that good.

Did have a few near misses but thats because half the population are idiots

CBT is the easiest thing youll ever do

Only think you may get annoyed at is speed and on long roads being overtaken a lot.

So it's a 125cc engine, "limited" to 50cc?

When 50's are restricted it's normally to 28mph

I think I'm ok with being overtaken because i used to cycle a lot but i cant now due to leg issues from an accident i was involved in. What kind of things mess up on them then. Also how did you get 70 out of one?

And yeah thats what I've been told about the engine. What kind of speed are 125s capable of?

Can't imagine you will see 100mph just judging by your pro/con above unless you had them the wrong way round and meant 45mpg on the scooter when I was 16 a mate of mine managed to get his to go 60 several weeks later it blew up, if your saving money is public transport not an option? Or a lift with a workmate.

I can't talk I live 1 mile from work and I drive but That's because I don't come alive till half way through the day

My bad i meant 100Miles Per Gallon from the moped so less petrol.7

As far as public transport there pretty much isnt any that i could use due to work times. And there arent any workmates nearby as its a small shop.

I know what you mean about coming alive half way through the day though I'm exactly the same.

Carb problems mainly.

I got 70 by basically uprating most parts and I had pistons rebored. A lot of people choose to put a sports exhaust on normally which can be picked up from scrappy for 40 quid ish. Leo vinci is good make

Ah right. I think id probably just de-restrict it to 125 and maybe get a sports exhaust if it was still silly slow. Damn this idea may actually not be a bad one.

I'm 99% sure you can do your CBT on a 125 you're fine for a 125 on L's, certainly a good idea if you're doing a lot of miles on it (and there's a fair bit of you). If you just want a commuter, a CG125's hard to beat. They cost a bit more because of their reputation of being stupidly reliable. Spend a grand on one, and you're onto an 80+mpg winner.

Falling off hurts, but that that don't kill you only makes you stronger. Just make sure you've got the right gear. Don't buy a 2nd hand helmet, but you can get everything else second hand. My normal bike jacket was £20 off ebay and looked like it'd hardly been worn.

Awsome. If i did the CBT on a 125 i could still ride a 50cc right?

Ill look into a CG125 if this moped isnt good.

All I can say is Honda c90 can pick so many up for £200 each therefor basically disposable and a little more kick than a 50cc so your pizza will stay warm. There's a forum for them with a for sale section (I only know because an old work mate raced them between supermoto meets)

if you go for the 125 on a cbt do it on a geared bike rather than the auto scooters.

more to take in with the clutch-gears ect and maybe need an extra half day possibly but so much fun and also puts the scoots to shame.

i have an auto 125 scoot for nipping about but am looking into a decent bike now for the thrills

Get moped to 125cc

However there is also the optition of buying a normal bike for example a 650 and you can get them limited to 33bhp and I think you can ride on Cbt. Don't quote me on that because I'm not 100%

But yeah, i'd defiantly go for it, you won't regret it

anything above 125cc needs a proper bike licence.

also I used to get 100-120 MPG out of my old 50cc vespa, so big mileage is possible however that was a manual not an auto, never owned a rev and go.

I've just got my full bike license and still want a honda zoomer 50cc as I think modded they are awesome... From the sounds of it you cant really afford to moved out comfortably? But If your going to you want to same cash where you can!.... I earn alot more and still think I've not got enough lol

this was one hell of a scooter when jetted up right

i got 65 mph but was restricted by gearing.. but it wheelied all the way there!! over £1000 o tuning, was reliable for me to sit on duel carrigways, never used coolant, and never ever blew a cylinder or gasket

anybody who states a 125 can go above 70 as standard is chatting doggy poop, i was in the scooter tuning scene with 125's and 50's for a very long time

the fastes 125 scooter record was set on a gilera runner at just over 100 MPH by a guy know'n as 'shiney red' he owns a scooter tuning shop in stroud

reality of it is a 50cc will do you fine, it will be reliable if maintained, use good synthetic oil and make sure you change your piston rings once every 7000 miles, most places recomend alot more, but for the few quid, and hour and half it takes your scooter will live forever!

I miss my ped! Seriously debating about getting another just for a laugh!

£7 would last me all week, well over 100 miles. Tune the shitt out of them and it costed next to nothing compared to cars!
