The respray is going to wait until next year or else I'm never going to drive this car! In the mean time, I want to make the 30 year old paint look as good as possible. I have heard of people using wet and dry paper on old paint in the same way as when flatting back fresh paint. Normally you'd flat with wet and dry and then cut with a compound. However, whilst repairing my wings, it was obvious that there is loads of oxidised paint already there which just clogs the wet and dry. Therefore i was thinking I could cut back using G3, wet and dry and then cut, polish and wax as usual. Any one doine something similar?

believe me your just going to end up making life very very hard for yourself if you wet flatt it, with the paint being so old and hard it will take forever to buff back up, if you want to bring it up a little then try a 4 stage buff? make sure the car is clean of all dirt and grime, then buff using g3(or similar) using a wool mop head, the wool head will cut the old paint better than a normal compound head, be carefull not to get the surface too hot as the wool will burn through easyer than a hard foam. once youve taken the top surface off re do the car with g3 and a standard compound foam but use the machine at a slower rate, once youve gone over all the car wipe off with a microfiber then get set for another go ha ha. use a soft eggbox foam and a fine liquid compound, this will get rid of your swirls and light fine scratches that the other mop heads will have caused, then finaly finish off with a soft eggbox foam and a liquid wax to seal in your fresh looking paint

X2. If you put the time in it will deffinatly pay off. Sure there are short cuts you could take but doing it this way is the best.
