95 RON and 98 RON, Shell V-Power POLO 6n2 GTI

Featured Replies

Hi guys, been reading about using 95 RON and 98 RON, Shell V-Power etc.

I'm curious what fuel you use in your Polo and do you notice any difference in performance or efficiency when you use the so called premium fuels? Do you feel the extra cost worth it?

Tbh you won't really notice the difference unless the engine timings and such are tuned to run on it, you might see a few miles from the tank but that's likely to be all you'll notice, I think V-power is aimed more at stuff like TT's and the like

The 'performance' diesel fuel is a joke too, diesel is diesel, no matter where you get it from, saw a few extra miles from Shell but it ain't worth the extra 6 to 10p a litre and 5 mile trip to get it

dont really notice a difference

I thought that v-power burnt loads quicker and was a waste lol

Higher the RON number the more resilient the fuel is to detention allowing you to run more ignition advance and higher compression ratio. Also on turbo or supercharged applications more boooost! Unless the engine is set up for it you'll see little gain in using it.

My AFH was mapped on 95 but I could prob run more advanced ignition timing on 98+

Did read somewhere that Lupo's and Polo's with the 100bhp 1.4 16v or GTI versions are supposed to use 97 or 98 RON.

Not true my tuned HDI knocked like hell will reg diesel and only made 114.3bhp and with bp ultimate diesel the engine was a lot smoother and made 119.2bhp

Tbh matey, I've not noticed any difference between BP/Shell and supermarket in terms of running/mpg/power/boosting etc.

Except for Morrisons, god knows what they put in that, but my polo runs crap on it

Near us they had an entire tanker delivery of water, god knows how or why but it did boost the work load in the workshop with the amount of broken down cars

Some cars are tuned for it, also some vauxhalls have a plug you can flip 180 deg to have a map suited to 95 or 98 fuel.

Tbh you may get better mpg but other variables would probably effect it more, also I doubt the gain justifies the extra cost.

I run higher octane due to ignition and such

I love to know more about the "and such" of your 6N dude. Higher octane wish I could afford to buy it today, used to run it in my 1293cc Mini when it was 95p to 99p a litre lol!

As for tuned diesels I'll let you know when I've got the GTD in my Caddy... On the veg or similar! Mates been having good results with his engine swapped series 3 Land Rover on some home blends!

IDI TD FTW!

Haha what you mean?

Also, fucking around on rolling road at college we made more power on 95 than 105 race fuel 8-)

Have you got a build thread on here for the 6N?

Yeahh, good luck though, about 4 good pages and 50 odd of shit haha

I run the mk2 on Tesco 99 momentum before that I was using normal Texaco fuel and there is a difference, car runs smoother and I seem to get a fair few more miles out of £20 worth of 99 than I was out of Texaco's shit

The 1.6 16v engines do run high compression, shouldn't need high octane but, like Guy, i get good results (namely longer mileage) with Tesco Momentum 99. It was particularly noticeable with the MK2's 1.6 AFH running very high compression, although it ran okay on 95.

Been using diesel again lately, have tried the special version a few times but i forget to notice whether there's a difference or not, and whether it'd even matter anyway if the dreary Golf was marginally any quicker or not.

Given that it'll run on a mixture of Bisto, Oxo, Flora and bacon fat i don't think one type of diesel is gonna make too much difference anyway.

Is that any surprise?!

High octane certainly doesnt affect the running of my GT. Pissing money up the wall if your car doesnt need it!

I put Tesco Momentum in my bike and it does give more power

You will always go further on V-Power (petrol, the diesel isnt the same difference as it were).

It DOES give more power pretty much regardless of the engine. I have found with all three MK2/3 engines I've had it gives around a 7% increase in power and if driven the same as before will give significantly better economy.

With the added benifits of the valve-cleaning properties of V-Power and the rewards card bonusses, its a no-brainer in my opinion.

Also, despite the higher numbers (99) and lower price (generally) I've found tesco momentum to be not quite as good as V-Power (as one would expect), though weirdly the engine ticks more calmly on the former.

How have you measured the power and economy increase?

Things arn't always as you would expect

This and local availability are what initially got me to try momentum but being happy with the results I got have kept me buying it. Besides its consistency should also prove beneficial when mapping once its charged

It is a complete waste of time to buy a few litres of 'super' petrol and expect to notice the difference! The 'normal' petrol that is left in the tank, probably dilutes it out of all recognition.

That said, after about three tankfuls of '97', my 6N was noticeably smoother, acceleration felt improved and MPG made a slight improvement (measured tankful to tankful).

As said above, in order to gain any performance benefit from these fuels, you need the ignition timing to be advanced, further gains would probably be made by an increase in compression ratio.

This is surely where the knock detector comes into its own, as the ECU will advance the ignition timing up to the point where the knock detector tells it not to advance it further, thus, if the fuel will allow more advance without detonation, then further advance will take place automatically.

I have noticed that engines running on these so called super fuels, do in fact stay cleaner in the area of the combustion chamber, maybe this in itself indicates that the combustion process is more efficient.

My local 'proper' petrol station is a Total, I am using their 'Exelium', and quite happy with the results that I am getting.

Regards.

Where possible the G40 always gets V Power, but Tesco 99 is ok. It's noticeably smoother on the Shell stuff than anything else though.

Passat was almost the same though. Closest station to Max HQ was a Shell one so it always had 95RON Shell put in. Then I went home to Cardiff for a weekend (it would do the trip there and back on one tank) and put some supermarket fuel in. Might've been 24hr Tesco stuff, not sure. It wasn't much different in terms of smoothness but the range dropped 30 or so miles.

I could usually wring 500 miles out of that car with basic 95RON Shell fuel in the tank. Supermarket stuff I'd be getting 460-470 on a motorway run. I don't know why, and I'm aware it's not a scientific test, but it wasn't an isolated incident.

Didn't see the benefit of V Power in the Passat though.

Morrisons fuel from what I've been told has a high level of silica in it and doesnt conform to BS ratings. thats why theres adverts on the pumps where the BS Kite mark usually is. How true it is I'm unsure but my car absolutely detests it!

If this is true about the high levels of silica in Morrison's fuel, then I certainly don't want any, as it would be like adding (fine) sand to the petrol. I'll stick to the Total then!!!

NOTE: if anyone cares to cut open a well-used petrol filter, let it dry out and then open up the paper element, you may be surprised just how abrasive the stuff is that has been filtered out.

Regards.
