Declaring things on the insurance

Featured Replies

Right so I'm with Admiral and the other day a lady drove into me and I went to the garage they contacted to go and get repair estimations. The guy had to take photos of my whole car as part of what he has to send off.

I'm worrying a bit because I have a GTI grill, carbon wrapped front and rear badge, yellow tinted fogs with carbon wrapped surrounds, de wipered rear and some stickers on the rear window all of which are not declared.

I've heard Admiral are really strict and even though it's the 3rd party's insurance that is paying the repairs do you think I'll get any hassle from Admiral about these things?

N.B. he didn't take any photos under the bonnet so he didn't look for any performance modifications (I don't have any anyway) but I think he may have checked for aftermarket suspension (again which I do not have yet)

the garage i went to was one they recommended, the guy send all the info off to admiral.

I'm hoping they won't mind seeing as really it's only decorative changes, the grills my only concern although it is an OEM grill.

I didn't think they'd need to be disclosed but this has got me wondering!

If I were you I would just declare everything no matter how small just so you don't have to worry incase of an accident (things like a grill and stickers wont even bring the price up probably)

I'm with Adrian Flux and absolutely everythings declared on a like for like basis. I have to have over 200bhp before my premium rises anymore.

Perhaps this could serve as a lesson going forward.

All changes made to the vehicle from when it left the factory need to be declared, there are MANY insurers who cater for modified cars insurance , some specialise in it!

I'm lowering it on Saturday so when I ring to add that I'm gonna add everything down to stickers.

I reckon it should be okay for this claim seeing as I'm not at fault, I only think the insurance companies start being picky when they are having to pay out to try and get out of it so I'll make sure I declare it all!

My mate missed a red light and had a crash - his fault. The car he collided with, the driver got banned because he hadn't declared mods.

Not his fault one bit either

What were the mods though and how big was the crash?

I have nothing performance related and I just spoke to my dealership as they powder coated the wheels, vinyl wrapped the roof and de badged it before I bought it and I asked him about declaring that and the grill and he said as long as its not performance and it's not after market I shouldn't worry. As far as I'm aware the car rolled off the assembly like like that (minus the grill). Also my crash was very tiny, just a bump no damage to the third party's car and just a dent in mine so I doubt my insurers will be looking for a way to avoid paying

Yeah, I'm just talking about ''to the book'' here, lots of people get away with lots of things, but IF they wanted they COULD fuck you over, but I doubt it!

Oh yeah I know that, I'm definitely gonna put everything down after this

good news repairs have been authorised so I'm assuming it's all gone through fine. Gonna learn from this and declare every little thing after the repairs are done!

One piece of advice I heard was that you need to declare anything that you couldn't have got as OEM. So if you change the wheels from stock, steels to alloys, then you don't need to worry about that as the dealer would offer those as optional extras.

Last time I have to declare anything on insurance, I told them it had an uprated exhaust and a remap chip and had a rolling road readout to prove that it didn't increase the performance above stock (In all honestly the engine was a bit screwed and it . They said it was fine with the exhaust as they could say it was for cosmetic reasons only, but wouldn't cover the cost of the uprated exhaust only stock. They wouldn't however cover me with the chip in the car. I had it swapped back to stock in the end as not only did I want insurance, but it wasn't a very good one and because of the power increase, it fried all my valve seals. (I'm now remebering all the things that went wrong with that car.)

So from this I have always assumed that anything cosmetic is not a big deal, but if you have to get money back from them to replace the car, it would be for a stock model.

Performance mods on the other hand, I think are a must to declare.

Any modifications including dealer fitted options, cosmetic or otherwise that are not declared is reason to refuse a claim and leave you uninsured.

The excuse 'it was fitted when i bought it' won't hold any water and can leave you uninsured.

also you don't need to crash to get caught, all it takes is for you to get pulled by the cops and for them to check the MIB to view your policy details if they find that your car is modified without the correct policy you will get done in the same way as an uninsured driver. e.g. car seized, 6 points and a fine.

the onus is on you to make sure that all modifications are declared and you buy the correct policy.
