Gunna eventually replace the ht leads aswell, but new dizzy including new cap & arm, plugs, filters and oil change will do for this month (hopefully)

Even though the weather is beautiful the car is not, finally sorted the distributor and gave it a full service. Then went oout to get some milk this morning and the head gasket went, luckily it didnt overheat so it might just be replacing the gasket. Lost quite a bit of coolant but most of it came out of the exhaust :'(

you absolutely sure the head gasket is blown? i didn't see any water coming out the exhaust when following you back from eynsham. I'm sure that rattle noise we could here was the waterpump, or at least bits of the waterpump. it's pretty unusual for a head gasket to just let go completely. if you want the gasket swapped on the cheap, i can recommend a mate of mine who would probably do it for you.

Well it wasn't overheating at all, only got upto about 80. I might be able to get it sorted but I'll give you a shout mate.

A mate popped round in his new M3 yesterday to add insult to injury, gave it a clean for him!

Looks like mine isnt gunna be on the road for a few weeks, will be getting a new head gasket, water pump and cambelt. Coilovers will be a while i think :(

Thats how mine was! I think because id got a few mates to fit the dizzy we'd moved it so much the head gasket went

steve you should get a job as a mechanic! moving the dizzy won't blow the head gasket, not without giving the car some serious beasting!! you would have had to run an extreme amount of advance to get the engine hot enough to damage it (and if that were the case, you would have overheated the engine and most likely warped the head). Should have left the dizzy alone, it was spot on (or at least very near)when I drove it.

A more likely reason for the head gasket failing would be lack of use over the last two years, then being put back into daily use. Polos can suffer from galvanic corrosion between the alloy head and cast iron block, not having the engine running for two years is a good way of promoting corrosion, as there is no oil or coolant (the coolant contains corrosion inhibitors) flowing around the waterways and oilways keeping them protected.

It was my dad who told me it went due to the distributor, but hes a landscape gardener so...

I spoke to the next door neighbour and he said the same as you, I only drove a maximum of 10 miles after we'd fitted the dizzy and I wasnt tanking it so it must have just been inevitable.

Should be running mint in the next few weeks though, hate public transport.

Might be able to buy a few bits for it even if I can get some lower springs for the time being, I dont want to rush this car with the general condition of it. Just looked at my old build thread and how often updates were, got me in so much debt

Well if finances would let me I was gunna slam it to the floor this year and G40 it next year, but by the looks of things thats not gunna happen so i'm just gunna make it up as I go along

Already got the G40 brakes and braided hoses in the garage so they will be refurbed and fitted with the coilovers. I'm so impatient though!

I'm only about 5"9-10 at a push, I was carrying the head on the bus...

hope that head is going back on with a gt cam in it! having said that though, that inlet manifold and that cam look like 1.3 spi items to me. I could be wrong though. easy way to find out would be to google the part nos.

head looks a bit pitted in the pics, gone in the classic place for them, ie. the cylinder nearest the cambelt.
