From a certain point in 2001 onwards small diesels should be cheaper tax, anything before then will be rated on cc rather than emissions tho so will be the normal rate

id advise a classic car, something old and small engined (small engine mk2 golf etc) insurance can be had for less than 200 quid a year.

if i bought an earlier car id end up changing engines and suspension and pimping it and being back to square 1, just in more style hehe

Yeah but you've got the chance to kill 2 birds with one stone. Get an early polo and leave it alone. Then when the times right, swap engines with the 6n and build up something else to drop in. Its what i've done!

Honestly, there's nothing worse driving round in some shitter, knowing youve got an awesome car waiting to be driven. Get something else you will enjoy! Its not like they cost that much...

i just got a mk2 golf gti. Not bad on fuel, cheap-ish insurance, made up with it.

Gotta say I agree with max on his point. That focus I had recently was me doing exactly what max is on about, I bought it soley as a cheap car to get the family from a to b. It did everything I needed of it but i hated every thing about it, its dull and unconnected driving experience, its bland and boring looks. So I ended up fucking it off for some thing I liked that still ticked all the boxes the focus did

Perhaps if you didn't drag your MK2's along in sparks you could use a real car as a daily - my MK2 did the 55 miles a day commute from western MK to Rushden commute for several months faultlessly with a bike-carb'd 1.6 16v in it 60/40.

Kept me getting outta bed in the morning. Then driving a Golf MK4 TDi.. and i hate it. Use a car you enjoy driving. Even if it has to be a MK1 106 XSi, for fuck sake dont use a modern TD it'll kill your soul!

Try and find an insurer who can 'mirror' your NCB onto the second vehicle.

My mk2 has been a very competent daily for the year that its been on the road (sparks and all), the only reason I've had to get a second family car has nothing to do with how the polo drives but the fact the misses will be popping out another little one in September, add that to the twins we already have and the polo just isn't big enough any more, 2 booster seats and a baby seat won't physically fit in the back of it and the boot isn't big enough for the push chair

If I bought a "fun" car it would defy the point as I'd throw it about and blat around everywhere.

Just want something I can pick people up on the way to work in, is a bit modern and easy to drive.

Something like a polo estate would be nice but the TDI's cost a bit to insure and diesel without boost seems a shit idea haha.

Nothing stopping me buying a mk2 anyway, once I have space and my lotus 15 is in the garage I can use the space where thats kept for a project car.

Yeah they did, but mine had the bosch pump so it could be run on a 50/50 mix of veg and diesel, also pretty easy to tune :) TBH i really liked it, and if you go for the d-turbo S you get half leathers too
