hi,

just put my polo in for an mot yesterday and yeh, it failed on emissions.

they had done the pre '92 test on it too.

i had only just stuck new plugs, dizzy cap & rotor arm on it.

i cannot think of what else i can do to it to make it pass.

can anyone help?

What did it specifically fail on mate?

Any mods?

I assume its carbed?

Was it HC or PPM or what? :)

as it states on the paper it failed on:

exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive

" " hydrocarbon content excessive

the car has no mods at all, its a standard mk2 polo bready, 1.05L, (1989-G reg)

i believe it is electronically carbed.

this is my first car/project so excuse my lack of knowledge.

Was the engine cold when it went in for the test? As engines have worse emissions when cold. My trick is to take it for a good blast before the test, but i'm not sure that would have helped here. It could be running a bit rich maybe?

the engine wasn't cold, i wouldn't of thought, i was driving around like normal before i dropped it in there.

i have been told that the car is running rich, how would i go about making it run erm poor/better.

someone said pouring redex down the carb would maybe sort it.

also here are the statistics for the emissions as stated:

CO MAX-3.50% ACTUAL 3.66%

HC MAX 1200 PPM ACTUAL 2262 PPM

like i said before my knowledge about polo's is very limited.

Do you know if it failed at idle or fast idle, or both?

They're a bit awkward to achieve, you can adjust to compensate one but mess up another.

I'd imagine your mixture screw could be tweaked, and maybe check your ignition timing.

If the engine is standard and on a standard carb it should be achievable.

Does your distributor have what looks like a saucer on it with a pipe coming off it?

& for reference, running "rich" youd refer to it as wanting to make it "leaner" not poorer :) but I see the logic there haha :)

Mine just failed on emissions as same as above. Mine is a g reg coupe s. Thought i got the timing quite good. mine is a pierburg and yeh its got a saucer on the dizzy. Think its the 2e3 type. Its definetely running a bit rich Can the timing actually make it run rich???????? Whats my options/fixes here guys?

Got it passed on a re-test after filling up a half tank of petrol, replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter and load of carb cleaner in it. Drained a load of the oil outa it aswell so oil was on minimum. Got it passed but running a bit lumpy the now. Typical pierburg carb needing fine tuned and the usual small polo issues that CAN be sorted.

Usually tweaked the tester will work, £5 note or a pint might wrk, lol

The emissions test is totally bollocks, the tester will know how to "adjust" it, this is the trade I am afraid.

I am an not tester, so this is coming from experience, although I haven't done this as I usually don't bother testing it 100% as I can't stand there and bullshit people..
