got some new springs i need fitting on my 91 gt polo coupe can do the job myself but have no sping clamps compressors , anyone around my that can help ? m42 j5 solihull west mids

corr what a job, just done this on saturday. not close enough to help really, but you will need spring compressors. the rears you can do without, and use the weight of the car, but youll struggle without a compressor on the fronts.

and i couldn't find any other way to get to it without disconnecting the whole front leg from its driveshaft, brake calliper, etc etc. oh and theres a funny little circular nut-like bit that's a bitch to get off.

i had a look at the ones in halfords and thay look nasty and cheap and do not want to loose any fingers

i used my uncles, they cost him 25 quid off ebay, worked a treat

Erm well you could buy the 1's from halfords and use a ratchet strap to make sure, You defo wont loose fingures then. We have 1 at work that is shocking, We put a F430 front coilover in it and it decided to jump out and land on the floor LOL. But hand held 1's are the way forward.

thats what I'm worried about not sure what to buy ? and spend shame really as only going to use them once

Erm well you could give it to a garage? But you could end up paying more. These will do the job perfect mate!

Take the shockers off complete and take into a garage with your new springs.

They'll charge but at least you won't have a spring embedded in your forehead and you won't be left with a tool you won't need

I've just realised, you're only doing the fronts so you dont actually need one if i remember correctly, one time youd need one is disassembling but if you have a vice or something to stop it pinging at 100mph you'd probably get away without one.

tbh mate, if i were you, id see how far you can get and at worst if you need to go get some from halfords. but at the end of the day, if you can do it without then its 30 quid saved

You could do it the barry boys way, Leave the shock on the car, and take the top mount off whilst running away and boom, but i would rather use them £30 1's tho

you guys make it out to be absolutely lethal. just make sure you face away from the spring and take care, honestly, dont worry so much, give it a shot or spend the 30 quid up to you buddy

but tbh, the garage will probably charge you less than the cost of spring compressors if you walked in there with everything you need, cant imagine they'd charge 30 quid to swap some springs on already removed shocks. i'd do it for nothing if i was a mechanic (probably a good thing I'm not, or id be broke )

i did my brake pads too so check them... erm, the rest depends on the condition of your bushes etc, might want some bump stops too on a standard shock, but thats up to you.

was thinking top shock mounts ? but again not sure what ones and who from ?
