Goes without saying

I know what your trying to do with the re-building of the head as I rebuilt a whole engine. Although I did it as much for the experience as to make it a 'new' engine. But the money involved is considerable so it really is worth listening to people when they recomend that a second hand head may be a better option. As you say, it may not last long with a used head, but are you confident you can put the head together properly? If not then your paying someone to do it for you (unless you have nice friends) which then further adds to costs. 16 new OEM valves are going to cost a fair amount, then with new guides (if yours are buggered) and seals I can't see it being financially viable myself. However, when I do the next engine transplant, I will be rebuilding it again, so I can't really talk! But I have the money and time put aside to do this. and if it goes wrong, its not my daily.

People may come across as putting you down, but its sometimes worth listening to others.

I will be rebuilding the head along side Dubz-by-dan.

I listen to others, but I won't listen to comments which are purely negative like "replacement valves are shit", fair enough if you've actually had a bad experience with replacement valves, tell us. but if you're only saying something because you've read it on the internet, nobody wants to hear it.

I'm building a new fresh head and I'm going to have one of the best volkswagen professionals in the UK looking over my shoulder while I do it.

I'm getting OEM valves anyway.

Are you telling me every race car with uprated aftermarkt valves are running 'poop' quality valves?

Why do you allways refer to ravecars?? Its a 1.4 polo lol

Also do you realise how often racecar engines ect are rebuilt?? There not out doing thousands of miles lol

"race cars" have aftermarket valves, probably BETTER quality, or maybe sodium filled for better heat dispersion etc.

OE valves will be fine providing they're lapped in properly and seats are good

I'm not even sure that non-oem valves would be any worse. I'm interested as to where that information has come from. Perspective needs to be maintained. How long, realistically does the engine need to last? Obviously you could get a catastrophic failure due to 'lower quality' parts, buts with a valve, I don't see that being too likely this wear is your main concern

I'm not saying that my car is a race car.

However I'm not sure if you watch any racing but there's plenty of 1.4 Polo race cars, and they enter them into the 1400 class.

Oh, look a 1.4 8v.

No they're not doing thousands of miles, but they're driven hard, hence being rebuilt all the time.

I don't need to explain my point again, you can just re-read what I initially stated. I couldn't have been clearer.

I'm merely questioning logic. Everyone seems to be so negative on this forum, constantly finding a way to pick holes in anything that I post up.

I was once told by a very wise friend of mine this.. "Those who do, do. Those who can't, talk about it on the internet."

My concern is to replace my bent valves with straight ones. I'm not overly bothered how long the engine will last, I want to build up another engine from the ground up in the future anyway.

Someone's friend obviously stated that non-oem valves are "shit".

So because their overly educated an experienced friend told them this useful piece of information, they now know everything about replacement valves and must advise anyone on the internet that replacement valves "are shit".

I'll re-build my head. I'll drive my car and I will let you know if replacement valves are shit. As supposed to giving out useless, "advise" with nothing to back it up.

Well done for making sense of what i wrote above, struggling with a new computer (keyboard is stupidly offset!) and a few beers hadn't helped!

As for your reply, if your not bothered about this particular engine, then I wouldn't bother with OEM. When I rebuilt my 8v with GSF valves (they could be OEM quality, I'm unsure) they set me back 90 brick. And you've got twice as many!

Why are you arguing about valves?

Just replace them with decent ones and rebuilt the head :?

Lmao, I love this place.

LET'S ALL ARGUE DICKHEADS

I'm not even argue'in .. Just saying This is one of the things you cant skimp prise on as the tolerance is very little..

Alot of them burg cup cars have bike heads on lol ...

There you go, there's a bloke who is actually speaking from genuine experience, not just chatting shit.

Thanks for the comment. I'm getting the valves for about £130. (trade)

You mad, bro.

I'd be interested in seeing that, could you possibly link to any info on that? build thread would be awesome.

All 16? thats a good price. Remember your seals though and check your guides for wear. Be a shame to wear out a set of valves prematurely due to sloppy guides!

Servicing valve gear

Checking valve guides

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

◆ Universal dial gauge bracket VW 387

◆ Dial gauge

Test sequence

‒ → Insert new valve into guide until end of valve stem is flush with end of guide. Due to the slight difference in stem dimensions, ensure that only an inlet valve is used in the inlet guide and an exhaust valve in the exhaust guide.

‒ Determine rock.

Wear limit: 0.8 mm

^^^ same process i used to check mine

Google sorg motorsport.

This is the kind of comment which I appreciate. Information like this is always handy to reference.

Thanks for this dude.

New inlet mani fabricated as old one really wasn't doing me any favours.

Obviously head work is now required to run this manifold. Photos will follow.

Still needs a bit more on the inside of the pipes but here's where it is thus far.
