Charlie's 1990 Mk2 Polo Coupe S

I'm pretty bad at this whole 'build thread' thing..

But here's a few updates anyway.

I like to think I'm doing it the correct way around as there were a few issues with this car which need sorting (before any of the fun stuff)

Since owning, I've done this lot:

Oil Change

New Oil Filter

New alternator

New Starter motor

New Battery

MK3 golf header tank

Rocker Cover Gasket (looks to have been over tightened in the past, causing a leak - this is now fine after not doing it up to tight - I'd reccomend getting this through VW directly, it's not easy to find if you ever have to replace it. FYI - it comes with 2 pieces, one overall gasket, and a center bit which goes around the spark plugs.

and I've Stripped rear seats/door cards and all round head lining as it was tatty and it's lighter without it I suppose?!

As for the trumpets for the CBR600's, I actually ordered an airbox with the inlets and they're from the slightly wrong carbs, I wasn't sure and I got them cheap anyway, so don't make the same mistake as me, check before you buy anything, they might look similar in photos, but they can be different, as I found out.

And yesterday I smashed my sump down a backroad and my 2 day old oil is all over McDonalds car park, so the list keeps seeming to get longer..

It'll settle down and I can start doing some of my plans.

Another plan of mine is to get her down to Pipecraft to get a custom exhaust as the current one is pretty bad and it's about to fall off to be honest..

I'll get some photos up of the header tank as I think you might find that interesting..

Done a fair bit recently..

- Went through my sump. That was fun (2 days after the previous oil change..)

-Got a new sump off a 1.4 8v Polo, fitted by a garage because it's a bit tricky with the driveshafts and my exhausts in the way..

- Fixed

- Got myself some harness' which I'm going to run with the current seats at the moment (until someone I know hurries up and sells me

• One set of 4/5 Point Old school Simpson drag racing harnesses, thought they were a bit different.. :)

and the other set (for the passenger side) are 4 point Luke ones.

- New Plates (no more "Eric's MK2 Yeah boiii" )

- Stripped headlining & Sprayed parts of roof (only in primer for now)

- Prepped and sprayed the rear of the car black (ran out of paint so still have more to do)

- Found some "JDM" bolt on arches.. (similar to mini ones)

• Got them (really quickly) refurbed by a friend.

• Self tappered them on.

And here they are...

£50?

 nutter lol

are you putting arches on the rear too?

also i remember you saying about you got the timing done, how far out was it? does it drive better now? and isit quicker buy much?

I admire your enthusiasm mate, keep it up

Got new tyres today to please the feds. Idiots.

 nutter lol

They are on the rear mate. I'll post some better photos later.. That shot is just after I got the first one on it (used the shittest arch for a test)

The Dizzy was on upside down dude..

It's performing much better now it's got proper water (with a new header tank) and oil without a leaking rocker cover gasket .. So much smoother..

And yes, it's much faster than it was..

Once the carbs get balanced, she'll be good as gold..

Then onto stiffening her up!

The dizzy wasn't on upside down as such, more rotated 180deg, and then the HTs swapped round. It wouldn't have run at all if the dizzy was on upside down

Well, yeah..

Saying that it was upside down was quicker to write and most people would still understand it...

Better photo of arches...

arches are a good exuse for spacers! haha

*wider wheels!

Swapping the dizzy will only allow more advanced/retard of the timing, and I doubt you retarded it as it wouldn't even run properly on standard marks so I can only assume you've advanced it a lot more haha.

Wish I had vac advanced

I should think Eric swapped it for looks.

I should think Eric swapped it for looks.

yep! as id been told it makes no difference, also i had more adjustment after swapping it as it was fouling an outlet on the stat housing

"retarded it", technical term?

Regardless of where it can work or who did what wrong, it runs better on how it is now.

I mean no disrespect to Eric.

yeap it is a technical term, retarding the ignition timing makes the spark happen closer to TDC, advancing it makes it happen more before TDC

Was going to say if the dizzy was on upside down it wouldn't of run...

Mine's pretty much on full advance, back off slightly coz it started pinking ever so slightly.

Surely running the vac advance would make it waaaaay too far out?

Put any trumpets on yet Charlie?

You could advance the timing relative to standard marks and it could happen closer to TDC though.

FYI charlie...

Advancing the timing means primary ignition from the spark plug occurs earlier

Retarding the timing means primary ignition from the spark plug occurs later,

Vac advanced is kinda like having adaptability like you do on EFI. Or even just mappable ignition.

More load (higher throttle %age) = less vacuum meaning less vac advance meaning less timing advance.

Whereas at lower loads you get more advanced which is good and doesn't preign.

Also probably better for emissions too,

I ran a lot less base timing with vac advanced and was better than more base timing than no vac advanced, reduced flat spots and was just better drivability

I ran a lot less base timing with vac advanced and was better than more base timing than no vac advanced, reduced flat spots and was just better drivability

That's actually quite a good idea... Did you run the vac line from just one cylinder or t all four together? Something I've always wondered...
