Are HIDs legal? I mean I've heard alot of conflicting answers about if the car doesent have them factory fitted then there illegal and other things of that nature. Thanks for your help in advance

loads about it mate, search for it. But yes new law means all hids are illegal if not factory fitted or used with the correct head lamps, but its a grey area, if your running 6000k you can pretty much get away with it as there not hugely blue, I'm running 8000k and never had any problems with police, up to you really!

Right, I fitted HIDs last night.. and when people say headlight washers... you mean jets of water to clean the headlights?

Reason i ask is i don't understand the logic behind needing to wash the headlights to make them legal? The self leveling i get, but wash too? hmm.

Either way, i'm running 6000k.. I carry the standard bulbs in the car too so if i do get stopped i can change them over within 5 minutes. (which will also prove the copper how RUBBISH the standard lights are)

the wash thing is because dirty lights scatter the light (apparently) and with HID being much brighter, there's more chance of glare.

Personally, i've had HID's in all my vehicles (aftermarket, not standard) and i've never had any issues with the police - they've always been 6000k too. I just swap 'em for MOT

It's the first time i have had HID's but i'm not too worried about being stopped. As everyone says, it's a grey area.. I've more chance of being stopped for my 'UK Legal' pressed plates tbh!

I can answer the plates - unless they are of plastic construction, they are illegal. No ifs ands or buts.

Unless your HID's are really badly aimed and are bluer than the coppers warning lights, you should be alright

I've always carried bulbs with me, BEFORE the HIDs as i have a spare bulb kit.

I've perfected the "stupid" act for years :p I'm sure i could ask if it's ok to swop them back there and then.

Well i thought Theyd draw more attention in my 6N but I'm running an A3 at the moment so i didn't think the roz would be as suspicious

why don't anyone retro-fit their stock headlights with projectors???

yes it says for motorbikes but i have retro fit them into my Polo 6n2 with 4300k colour temp and they are fantastic... the cut off line is razor sharp and coverage is wide and far...

I can actually show you pic of the way i have done it if anyone is interested

done it to several cars and will continue on doing that

There is a small white and red wire that is next to the side light... that is the levelling controller.. if you connect that to the ballast then it will level the projector... have a look on youtube there are plenty of them installing.

I'll take some pic of how to do it in complete order when my next customer comes... the only hard part tbh is levelling the projector bang on straight as a tiny bit of will mess everything up.... ill show some pic in a sec

this wire is the leveling controller to level the headlight... but since your going to put a projector this will need to be in a socket that will come out of a ballast rather than that socket.

you will also need to take out the halogen headlight ring.

but make sure that you keep this save as you'll need it

slightly grind the whole in order to fit the projector flush in (you will not require this modification if you are using a 2.5" projector, only do it to the 3" model)

also make sure that the white holders are not snapped off because, if that happens the whole headlight reflector thing will vibrate and the projectors will flicker quite badly and you'll look like a 5-0 to other motorist

guys am waiting on one of the projectors so that's is all i have got right now lol....

ill finish this guide once i have got more projector supplied...

my tip is make sure you take your time with this, so get a donor headlight that you can use whiles your stock is still in the car.

and make sure you get the 3" as the 2.5" are shit.

Same here.

From our experience, and echoing what Duey said, so long as your lights are correctly aligned and you run a sensible temperature (somewhere in the region of 5000k/6000k), you shoud be alright. We've never had reports of anyone being pulled having bought one of our kits, but that isn't to say it doesn't happen.

It's very much a grey area, in terms of both legalities & MOT rules, and one which we tend to stay out of as nobody has a definitive answer.
