I think good rally drivers are very talented and very mad.

Ken Block is an example of a crap rally driver.

they're definately mad and what would be classed in some circles as NAFOD's (no apparent fear of death).

Does take some uber skill to keep the cars on the road at the speeds they go at.

Agreed, it is definite skill. My mate rallies mk1 and mk2 escorts.

Rallying was better in the late 70's & 80's when the likes of the RAC rally was 4/5 days n nights driving for up to 18 hrs a day with NO pace notes, the co-driver had to read the road from the issued road book with "tulip" diagrams and an OS map, and the likes of the works Quattro's and Lancia's were faster than todays playstation cars and the driver/co-drivers protection was'nt anywhere near as good as it is today

I've been rallying since i was 14. Co driven in some of the fastest escorts in the UK.

i started autotesting in a mini originally then a polo and currently have a full stage polo build in progress.

Also did the F1000 tarmac championship in a Mini a couple of years ago.

Thats how I bought the shell, it did'nt need the arches with the axle setup I was running and to be honest I was'nt too keen on the mk1 bubble arches.

Rallying is good but also takes far too much of my hard earnd cash. :grin:

and I only play at it doing tarmac stage events and a few road rallies.

Mid 80's rallying gave birth to some of the most outrageous cars. My thoughts are on the MG Metro 6r4..... an Austin Metro on steroids.

I'd love to try some form of four-wheeled racing sometime... Rallying or a rallying experience would be lovely :)

i have actually had a go in a 6R4, and was surprisingly underwhelmed, but mostly because this one didn't have a full group B V6 in it.

did absolutely destroy my hearing for a while though

I live about 4 miles from Dovenby Hall Estate HQ of Ford rally... would have met Malcolm Wilson and Matthew cos they landed their helicopter just around the corner on a stage I was at on the Malcolm Wilson Rally... but my girlfriend didn't want to move so I didn't meet them... stupid whore

I collected the Havoc series of crash videos as a teen, so much as i love watch rallying (even some of the crashes are entertaining) i don't feel propelled to give it a go myself.

Safety resources do so much, but crashes like this do happen and it can hurt..
