AFH Oil Pressure - Too Low!

Featured Replies

So yeah, I'm gonna torch this car soon, hoping someone can help here.

If anyone cares, rev's now work on the 6n2, with the AFH. So it might help if someone wants to run megasquirt/jolt on the earlier engines.

With the head off, I was cranking the engine to see if I had revs. Long story short, there was no oil coming up to the top of the block. I assumed it was because it needed the head.

Got it back together today after the head got skimmed and fired it up first time. Revs work, oil pressure light was off. Perfect.

After it got up to temp, it started to get a little tappety. A rev to 2k brought the light on.

Back to idle and the light went off. With the oil cap off, there was very very little oil being chucked about. Removed the sensor with the engine running and a treacle of oil was coming out. Very slow flow, it would cover my thumb after a few seconds.

The tappet noise got louder so I killed it and started taking bits off. The cams have oil on them, but not that much. Never seen one properly working before, so don't know how much oil there is supposed to be getting chucked around there.

Dropped the sump and found a little bit of swarf at the bottom, not much mind. The inside of the pickup tube is cleanish, however. Took the pump apart and it cleaned it through.

Note; this is a BRAND NEW oil pump, it's had less than 20 miles on it now..

Removing the filter and not alot came out. None on cranking.

It's a chain driven pump btw.

Please help. :(

Also, would oil weight change things? Threw some 20/50 mineral in it just to get it going before I did a change.

But even with the head off, it had 10/30 in it and there was nothing to the head. So i doubt its that..

Correct oil pump gasket?

Pattern for 6n2 item and late AFH is different than that of the chain-driven 6n engines including earlier AFH. It's just an end plate for the crank oil seal on chain-driven pump engines but is the pump itself on the later model. And it is possible to put the wrong gasket on because the key pattern is the same. This single sheet metal gasket could block the oilway at least to some extent, if the wrong type was fitted.

Oil pump gasket? The block I got off Stevo-Trendy already had the pump on it, brand new from VW at 101 quid..

I was surprised when I took the strainer section off to find no gasket, however. Still not quite following, though.

No, not there.

The alloy end plate on the outside of the engine with the crankshaft end sticking through it. This is just a plate on chain-driven pump engines, with an oil channel and oil seal in it. On later engines without the chain-driven oil pump under the crank it houses the direct drive oil pump - but it looks similar whether it's the late pump or the earlier cover plate.

This one is an oil pump..

Your one will be shaped differently but have the same bolt pattern. You must use the correct gasket for these or you can wreck havoc with the oil supply. Not the only possibility for your problem, but something worth checking.

Spot on Mikey! I took that off today anyway; never got to this till tonight. But, there seems to be a gap between the pump and that mating face.

Checked Vag-cat today, and the only thing I can see that goes in this hole is a bush? Seems to allow the oil to travel from the pump to that face?..

Otherwise, it looks like it's just pumping straight back into the sump because of this gap?

Namely this, number 9? It doesnt exist, and would explain the gap between the pump and the end seal. Atleast, I think that's the problem. Hoping to pick it up from VW tomorrow at half 9, but they tried to phone at half 5 today, so I'm not that optimistic. :(

Hopefully I'm on the road to recovery though.

Yes, you need '9' fitted on the chain drive pump. It's a steel relay tube, thickly rubber coated, sandwiched between the pump and plate (slots into both, take care fitting it straight so you don't pinch the rubber). About 15-20mm long and about 15mm internal diameter off the top of my head.

Without it you're correct - the oil will piss out between the plate and the pump straight back down into the sump.

Yeah if that's missing it may explain a bit ha

Sound, cheers lads. It was the only bit that I never touched when I got the block, it was obviously missed out on the rebuild! :(

Cheeeeers.

  • 11 years later...

Does anyone still read these posts as I've just done exactly the same thing 🤣

Please tell me I can get to this with it all in the car...
