Right so my car (80mm lowered MK2F Polo) failed its MOT today on a few things, but one of them has me stumped.

"excessive movement in a MacPherson strut upper support bearing assembly" I have this on both off and nearside.

Google hasn't brought up many answer. Can anyone shed some light on what this actually means?

Yeah, MOT tester said he didn't have time to go through it. Won't be going there again.

The top mounts where replaced when it was lowered about 1 year and a half ago and have only done around 3000 miles since then, Will they really have failed again or is this tester just talking shit?

There is supposed to be a certain amount of play in them, it used to say this on the form the tester prints out before the test begins.

If its under a certain time since failing get onto VOSA and demand a retest, if it passes the VOSA inspectors test the garage is in deep shit, if it fails it fails.

Just seen your other MOT failure post and no point retesting as you failed on other things.

Yeah it wasn't the only thing it failed on, some fouling, some rust ect. am trying to get everything sorted on it. But if the tester has failed it for something that is suppose to be like that then no matter how much work I do on it he is never going to pass it.

What do I do?

I think the test was a bit of an arse to be honest, there is even a fail on there for "Windscreen sticker or other

obstruction encroaching more than 10mm" just because it had a magic tree hanging from the rear view mirror. I know technically it is a fail but I have never heard of anyone actually putting it.

Play in the top mounts is a common problem when lowering these cars. Best way to get rid of it is to fit 6n top caps, gets rid of the gaps and lets you bolt them down tight.

I know a place down bury thats good if you want the details?

I got an advisory last year for a 'weak strut' basically he said the top mount was fine but my n/s strut was weaker than my o/s. I like the idea of the 6n top mounts tho. will have to look into these.

You can check your self mate, open the bonet, look at the top mount, shake the top of the wheel vigrasly and keep looking at the top mount. If it moves alot then Consider 6n/6n2 plates.

I know the mk3's have a problem with them, but I have to say a MOT tester that doesn't have time!! Lol!! Ahahahaha!!

Just take it to a reputable company! Be done with it. best of luck!!

Cheers guys, I had heard about the 6n top caps before. Am going to go and check around some scrap yards and see if I can find a set.

It was just a local garage I took it too called Magnum Motors, going to take it somewhere else when I have sorted a few bits. Might check out Wards End, do you have the number?
