I have a 2001 6N2 1.4 8v and I took it to "Kwik" Fit to get a free exhaust check before my MOT to see if it had any holes, they shown me it and it was all in good condition. So job done. But then when I pulled off from the branch, the check engine light illuminated! Then a couple days later I started the car and it went off so thought maybe it was just where they were banging the exhaust, and thought nothing else of it. Then a few days later it came on again, and went off a couple of days later... And you guessed it, it's come back on again when I started the engine up last night. Anyone have any ideas? Any sensors on the exhaust under the car that could have become loose when they were banging the exhaust?

Any advice appreciated :)

My light comes on in the wet...and living in Scotland...it's on almost all the time

I keep one of those reset tools in the glove box and switch it off when it comes on...

Can't remember the code that shows up off hand but it's the lambda sensor...

Ye I was thinking lambda sensor, but there's only the one (isn't there?) and that's in the engine bay by the exhaust manifold and they didn't check in there. I've had a play around with the connections, and they are all fine. Maybe I'll reset the fault codes and then see if it comes back.

You can get a cheap obd2 reader on ebay for like £20 can't you? Do you know if they are any good?

Yeah...sorry...it's the one in the manifold that shows the fault.

I cleared the fault, started the engine, and then re-read it, and no fault came. Any ideas if this means its game over for the lambda sensor?

If it has cleared and now no faults are showing it looks like it's OK but re-scan again after a few miles and see if it has re-occured it might be the wires from the front sensor are intermittant or when the exhaust place did their checks they "accidently" disconnected the connector so intoducing the fault codes in the hope of fleecing you for an unnessessary repair!!
