My Dad has recently told me he is getting married and he want's me to give a speech

i have no idea what to say as this will be my first ever speech at a wedding

Do i make jokes about him

or just say how awesome he is

If you have advice it would be very helpful

IMO it needs to be a balance between the two

If your not good at public speaking though your jokes may not come out very well. Bear in mind also that the jokes cannot be too specific as they have to cater for the entire audience, they need to know why a certain joke is funny!

You probably need to talk not only about your dad but his partner too, maybe some of the other key people at the wedding.

It's not something that will be easy to do. I spent forever doing a best man speach a while ago and it took ages to work out what needs to go in there.

There is plenty of advise on the web to help!

I would love to but my dad was adopted and think both set of his parents are there so i don't think it'd go down well...

I was best man at a mate's wedding, i asked my grandad for advice and he said to have the speech prepared long before. Know it word for word, and be happy with it however you read it.

Wanting it to be as natural as possible, and being the laid-back confident type, i didn't entirely take his advice - instead i decided what subjective content i wanted to cover, in what order, and let it come naturally.

It was a partial success, but taking his advice would've made it better. Especially as i opted not to read from a bit of paper. I didn't think it through enough, and only stood for a good comfortable period of time because i missed some vital bits out.

Your head just goes when you're up there unless you really rise above it and take it by the bollocks - and enjoy it!

The first one I did I was really worried so I got on the net and did loads of research (copying stuff) and made it relevant for my mate. I read it through to my wife for about 2 weeks straight until I could basically do it with out the script. It helped that it wasn't really long just over 2 pages and because it was in my head I could recite it rather naturally..

happy with how the first one went... when I did the other one it was more of a rush job and I didn't take my time to learn it.. and it showed.. not quite as good as the first..

Find out if there's a microphone, cos when I gave my speech as best man at my mates wedding it turned out there wasn't one and I'm not loud spoken, so I found this hard and if I'd known I would have practised speaking loud.

To answer your question if your dad's the jokey type that you have a laugh with then make it funny and take the Mick out of him abit, my dad's quite serious so I'd probably just say nice things like I appreciate what he's done for me and stuff. If I wanted to make it funny I'd probably talk about the embarrassing things that have happened to me that he'd had to deal with.
