MOT advice

Featured Replies

Hey all just passed my MOT but have been given a list of things to do soon they are:

Front brake pads as worn 75-80% - £139 inc VAT.

Front lower arm rear bushes split - £338 inc VAT

Cambelt due every 4 years or 60k - £329 inc VAT

My gti is on a 56 plate but only done 36k miles, why does the cambelt require replacing with so little miles?

Please help and are my quotes about right?

Cheers Dorey

sounds like your gonna get reamed. TBH i wouldn't use vw for any of those jobs listed above, you'll pay over the odds. Better to use a specialist or known good local garage. age of a cambelt is as important as the use it has had, hence it needing replacing every 4 years or 60k, whichever comes 1st

cool thanks what sort of prices for the jobs above are good value?

rang a few garages and have some better prices..

brake pads + cambelt is £230 inc VAT

suspension bushes (pair) £128 inc VAT

only problem is they are at 2 different places.. hay can't grumble at that

moral of this story.. VW quote high as they cba to do the work.

From experience , thats not a bad price for the bushes

my 9N ones i ended up fitting cupra ones , bloody nightmare if you dont have the right gear

For £128 personaly i think thats very reasonsable

I was quoted between £250 and £300 for lower console bushes

well , they just replace the whole arm with the crappy hex bushes

the quote for cambelt and pads seems reasonable too if its all done by a propper garage

Get the cambelt done at a proper garage, the brake pads do yourself.. and the bushes if youve got some basic skills are fairly easy to change!

i do agree i did my own bushes n i replaced them all with powerflex there so much easier to put in :) changed all my brakes and did the ARB aswel. the polo 9n3 are reali easy to work on. x

Research prices of parts, Ask on how much labour will be at specialist garages/ good 1's. Resulting in finding cheap labour, ask how much to do the whole job including parts, If your parts/ there labour come in cheaper then try and provide the parts your self. You can end up saving a few £100 and you get what parts you wont. Ie Brembo disc's/pads instead of genuine.

Any idea how hard it is to change cambelt? Doing brakes and brough bushes although not 100% on them, couple of guides if anyone has would be very helpful.

If you're in any doubt, I personally wouldn't DIY the cambelt on a 1.8T. Brake pads ought to be easy enough, just get a mate who knows what they're doing to look over your shoulder. Make sure you get the right ones though because from memory there was about 3 or 4 different types of caliper fitted on 9n3's last time I looked it up.

ok, I'm doing pads with a friend they are in the post. bushes ordered but not sure if i can fit them may find a friendly garage or see if local college can do it. cambelt I'll leave alone then as its a big mess if anything goes wrong

cheers
