polo's overheating

just been out in my polo and the temp gauge started going up and my red warning on the dash started flashing i pulled over and saw steam coming from the bonnet my fan didnt kick in and i managed to get home

a bloke said its the fan switch as he put some wire across the plug is this a common problem with polos

If the fan started to run when the switch was bridged out, then yes, you need a new fan switch.

I don,t think that you are any more likely to get this problem on a Polo than you are on other cars.

If it was overheating only at low road speed (as in traffic), that is probably the only problem, but if you were driving at a reasonable speed, the air moving over the radiator should have been enough to keep the temperature down. If it overheated under these conditions, you may also have a thermostat problem. If this is the case, you will need to change the thermostat as well as the fan switch and almost certainly, the thermostat housing as well, this IS a recognised Polo problem.

how much was the thermostat think mine has the same problem, its overheats when driving and stationery, but haven't had any smoke coming out and the fan isn't coming on, also when I put the heating on hot and full it stays at normal level does the engine temp

Thermostat's are not very dear. Euro Car Parts list them at about 15quid including thermostat housing. Quite often the thermostat forses itself closed too much and breaks the bridge it pushes against inside the housing. So that needs to be changed too. Easy job to do yourself and a haynes manual runs through it too.

This is very true.

My thermostat shut closed and overheated the engine. I replaced just the thermostat not realising that the housing was broken. not even a week later the car was running hot as the thermostat had opened and moved restricted the flow of water went to remove it and it sprung open and pulled the screws out of the housing and damaged the threads do I couldn't do it back up.

I learnt the hard way. I got a new housing and thermostat from volksbits but think its more expensive from them than ECP.
