6n Valver Accelleration

Featured Replies

Been trying to understand my valver for a while now and i still dont get it.

I will try to explain the best i can and hopefully end up with some answers...

1. Basically if i need to accellerate quickly from first its not bad, although if i drop from say 5th to 3rd its not amazing like i would think.

2. If i press half throttle rather than full it seems to pull better 90% of the time..

3. At 70 in 5th it pulls mint to 100 (private road somewhere) but at 60 it just does nothing.

4. At one point the car had a tapping noise, i felt the back of the peice that the throttle cable goes on to on the throttle body and it was moving and ticking, stopped now but dont know if thats anything to do with it?

5. Not great fuel economy tbh

Any ideas at all? am i just moanin? as I'm sure valvers are meant to be great for just a 1.4, its just not that impressive to me, even my red GT seemed more responsive.

Cheers

Pinking?

The tapping was a part on the back of the black peice which the throttle cable attaches to on the throttle body, stopped now.

Never driven one in a 6n but I've spoken to a few people that I trust the opinion of and they have said their fairly shit for a sporty hatch. I think what your experiencing there is the lack of torque in a relatively heavy car. The difference between accelerating from 60 and 70 is more than likely due to where you are in the rev range at those speeds, 70 is probably in the power band and 60 isn't.

That ticking is more than likely some thing to do with the idle position sensor or what ever its called. The ecu controls the idle by adjusting the throttle butterfly, some times that can spaz out a little but if its stopped now I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the fuel consumption, how does it seem to be running? Could be a sensor playing up which could also be why it seems down on power I guess.

The GT probably would feel more responsive than this tho tbh, its a lighter car with a very nippy feeling engine that does feel quicker than the figures suggest

I just had the thought of 100bhp (when it was new) being a lot better and having 16v's being a bonus but I kind of feel let down as when I had my first car, 1.0 6n I always said I would own a valver one day.

Anyway, it does smell rich, does have a fully straight through exhaust on with a 2.5 inch bore (I didn't chose this) but don't know if that will affect it?

I guess your right it does have a lack of torque bottom end but maybe they are all like this, I really would like to drive another valver and compare. Might also get it plugged into a vag com as I know someone who has one.

Cheers for the help though :)

Vag com would be a good idea. The afh in my polo's didn't feel bad at lower rpm's but that's probably helped by the lack of weight, still needed to be kept in the power band for it to pull hard tho. Also the exhaust probably isn't helping, I maybe corrected here but doesn't a more restrictive exhaust (at least to a point) help with lower down torque, and a more free flowing one helps more towards top end? Or am I just chatting shit?

Na I'd go for that theory guy

I find the 16v comes on song at around 3k which in 5th is 75ish (in my 6n2 anyway) so its just not in the power band. the half throttle thing is probably due to momentary overfuelling when you put your foot down whereas a smaller amount is injected if you use half throttle possibly running better. also, I have achieved 54mpg on a very long run in mine but as my normal driving is town based I don't get more than 30 mpg but I'm changing my high flow filter for a standard paper jobbie to see if that has an effect as I have heard that high flow ones can mess up the hotwire.

I sometimes have a slight tapping noise right at the throttle part too Jordan. What is it I wonder. 16v 6N

the tapping is the throttlebody position sensor. quite a few valvers suffer from this inc. mine. if you have taken the throttlebody out for cleanning it needs resetting in vagcom or replacing if it continues. mine does it but it doesnt really bother me.
