Thw 9n seems to have developed a roaring noise in the last few weeks. I've replaced tyres, thinking the slick nature of the may have caused an increase in road noise, bearings have been checked, but seem fine and brakes have been replaced (almost down to the backing plate!) as this was suggested at the tyre place as a possible cause. Still, I have a noise. I noticed an area on the drive shaft that looked like it had been rubbing on something but it hadn't worn the paint off, and the only possible cause I could see was a small wire conduit/tidy. But this wasn't worn. So I'm out of ideas. It's very loud, like a bearing, and it not got the tell tale knocking of a cv joint, so any ideas?

Did'nt think of that option but that could cause the problem

Hmm, that rules out arb then usually. Is it coming from anywhere near the gearbox? Mebbe check the oil level in there.

If it sounds too far out to be the gearbox then it could be a worn driveshaft. I had one go on my passat, but then to be fair it has done 196k so you'd almost expect it to be worn!

Does any of the following affect the noise:

Accelerating?

Braking?

Cornering?

Over-run?

Is it in all gears?

Is it at all speeds?

If you can answer these, we may be able to give a better educated 'guess' as to the source of this noise, something that is almost impossible to do accurately without actually hearing it.

As in the title, it alters with road speed. I've driven at the same speed in different gears to rule out the engine. Otherwise it doesn't change, cornering, braking etc have no effect

lol, are you SURE its not the wheel bearing? my old one was making more noise the faster i went, and when it was checked it didnt have any play, it just had next to no grease!

well, VR6's seem to roar, and a 9N has a 3 cylinder engine, so could it be that you have half a VR6 which would make it roar but half as loud?

My guess would be wheel bearing. As said, there doesn't need to be play in the wheel for the bearing to be knackered.

Jack the car up and spin up each wheel and listen out for any rumbling, and check that they all run as freely as each other. Use equal force to rotate the wheel and count how many rotations before it stops. If one stops significantly quicker than the others, bam.

It didn't say roaring first, I have edited it. I'll check the bearings again then, in the way suggested above. Hope it's a rear one!

My money would be on the wheel bearing, ideally you need to get it on a ramp and drive it, keep the speed at when the noise is most apparent, normally between 45 - 60, dump the clutch and kill the engine and listen for the whirring, also pays Off if you can use a stephascope.

This is assuming the noise is coming from the front.

Plus you need it loaded really to replicate the loading conditions on the road
