Spacers? - Failed MOT

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Need some help.

Failed the MOT as the tyre is fouling part of the vehicle...

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...=278036&hl=

Rotas, Offset 45, 7J and tyres are 195/45/R16.

What spacers / bolts will i need for the front?

I was thinking in worst case i could go scrap yard and get some tyres for the re-test.

Please help ASAP... :)

MANY THANKS!

Liam

Where is it fouling?

Would say if anything it would be near the strut leg, but that's not a silly offset so really dunno...

EDIT - Aha! I think it may be scrubbing the arch liner when full lock?

that is quite a big offset. my money is on it rubbing on the suspension. chuck some 5mm spacers on or something. may even get away with 3mm if its only just touching

Thanks for the replies guys.... Well, when the car was decked it was rubbing bad... and the inner arch bit had all the paint scrubbed away.

So i did get it heightened a little... No more rubbing when driving. But it does not state what it's fouling on.

Just says "nearside / offside front tyre fouling a part of the vehicle [4.1.D.2]"

more than enough room for the tyre not to hit the arch itself... I guess pictures wont help much? and it's hard for me to tell what it's fouling on.

The guy did say try spacers but again not sure what size... i have standard bolts on it at the moment. M12 x 1.5 thread, 27mm long. What bolts will i need if i get 3/5mm spacers on it? 30mm or somet?

Thanks,

Liam

your standard bolts will be fine on 5mm spacers bro. if its not hitting the arch and hes suggested spacers he must mean the suspension

I'm running 6J wheels, offset 42 with 185/55/14 tyres and they foul on the rear springs. Had to make some 6mm spacers to clear but it is still very close. Any wider and the spacers need to be hubcentric (with the spigot ring part of it) otherwise the wheels won't centralise on the spigot. This is for the mk2f though, don't know about the 6n2?

Is there any paint rub marks on the springs?

If its not actually scrubbing atall when turning etc get back down there AMD ask him to explain the fault.

Again, Thanks alot for the help....

Just went to get a few pics... Don't think they'll help much. But looking at it i guess it could be the suspension to be honest.

Blanked parts on the mot are silly little things that i forgot to sort out myself! :p

And the other bits are getting sorted shortly... some where fitted by VW and will be going back to get put rite and the exhaust will be sorted from a member on here. :)

Got to pop to halfords tomorrow to get a few things... So might just get some spacers from there. 5mm is the way forward then?

Thanks,

Liam

Thats rubbish, if u do em up in the correct way they should centralise fine. I'm using 10mm's with no spigots.

The only time you actually could need them is with wobble bolts

Yahh there fine dude

Spigot rings are designed to centralise the wheel within a certain tolerance. I agree they do not take the weight of the wheel. Torquing the bolts, even with tapered bolts can't get it within this tolerance. I'm an engineer by trade, I manufacture discs and wheels that have to run 100% true every day.

If worst comes to worst and somehow the bolt works itself loose, the spigot will help to throw the centrifugal force between the bolts. It will limit the movement of the wheel, which will stop the bolts from shearing straight off and losing a wheel. With spigots you will feel massive vibratons as the wheel moves around on the spigot, which will give you chance to pull over and tighten the nuts. You're not talking about running one slightly smaller than the centrebore of the wheel, you're talking about have absolutely zero spigot whatsoever which in my opinion is extremely dangerous. I know I'm talking extremes but it's not like it doesn't happen.

You may have ran so far with no problems, but tomorrow you could drive to work and not be so lucky.

Also a quote from Ronal Wheels themselves, and as I'm running Ronals I'll take their advice! :

"Hubcentric" is another term that is often not mentioned or is misunderstood. A hubcentric wheel is a wheel designed with a centerbore opening to match the exact diameter of the hub of a specific vehicle. The importance is that the weight bearing of the wheel, in reference to the vehicle, is accomplished by the hub and centerbore mating to an exact fit. The lug nuts/bolts' only purpose is to affix the wheel to the mounting surface, not to bear the weight of the vehicle. Often wheels that are not hubcentric create driveability problems--shimmy, vibration, and erratic tracking. Many quality manufacturers design their wheels to be versatile by providing hubcentric centering rings that snap into place inside the wheel, to make the wheel hubcentric. This is an important safety issue--hubcentricity is highly recommended.
