re-shelling my polo

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about re-shelling my polo as my current shell is rather rusted and could really do with a new paint job as its rather faded I've done the usual t-cutting and g3 but as always its back to being pink so its at that point where the only answer is a paint job but I've found a new shell which has a great paint job and looks good with no rust so I'm thinking of doing a re-shell but I'm unsure what i have to do about declaring this becasue the chassis vin number will change and like wise with the colour

has anyone dont this before and if so what paper work do i need to sort out

cheers matt

It will be a new car. So new tax, mot, insurance etc.

if you changed the vin plates, and it was the same colour, how could they possibly know? as it will have the same engine in it too!

It's etched into the bulkhead you goon!

inless you are a smart arse a cut the section out of the bulkhead and then graft it into the other chassis in the same place and that its dont with absolute perfection, but its not worth it really ill ring the dvla and see what advice they give me if they said that its a new car then screw it and ill get a new polo but there might be some way of doing it

The new shell I'm bot sure if its got glass in it still so ill have to check but I'm sure it will if its etched ill swap my glass over and this shell is a blue not red unfortunately but it depends what my plans are this is just a possibility I might use the shell for something abit more crazy

My '85 Comet blue Coupe-S used to be an '88 Tornado red model. Big difference in metal quality was also my reason. I still regard it as the same car - i sit in the same seat, holding the same steering wheel, turning the same steering column, shifting the same gear remote, surrounded by the same wiring loom..

But after a thought over a brew, i decided to use the new shell's id. Saved bare hassle. Least it's proper legit when the vin stamps are all correct.

I liked the old plate, and the old colour so much it almost got vins and paint for a full Jon Venables job.. but whatever (i put a personal reg on anyway, but that's not the point).

Helps with mods too - i knew i was gonna do engine conversions etc, and i didn't wanna end up on a Q-plate. With a factory registered shell i could swap the engine, gearbox and interior without question. But on a known re-shell, doing that left me without enough original car left to keep a proper reg. Not that it's a clean running system, it's a minefield of grey areas (and lets hope it stays that way before we're criminals for fitting an air freshener), but it keeps you out the spotlight if the shell has it's factory I.D.
