booooo i an see why youd need different maps ect for a turbo, but surely as a charger is always producing bost its easier to sort?

hmm is there not a way of keeping my dizzy then? itd only be on standard g boost anywayssss

  • Author

but thats not standard. i want to try and keep it as standard as possible! and see if it can be done on the cheap.

wont there be charger mount and alternator issues using a older engine?

I've got a charger you could have for £120 eric, weeps oil out of the seals but still boosted to 10psi with slipping blets 8-)

nah the engine fits the same as a g, still a 1.3 just different type of head. charger mount should go on the same!

haha tempting, how come it leaks??

just the oil seas are getting worn me thinks, so oil gets out. So it could do with a service. But you cant complian at 120quid can you

Eric! , stop calling me MaxMax after you've met me, I don't call you erixtar1992!

These are two threads you need to read;

And

It can quite easily done, look through there for the parts you need, also simon (prankstar2003) has most of the bits already, I sold all mine when I needed the money for a holiday.

hmm, it all seems quite easy to do apart from the carb settings and the distributor. hmmm

I thought the manifold got in the way?

Charger mount has a strange guard type bit sticking out of it near the exhaust.

id just grab a standard g exhaust.

turbo is expensive though and i thought a charger would be easier to get the fuelling right?

Saf had a G40 manifold for sale at all-types. Might still have it.

what a turbo mani? i was quite tempted to nick a mani off an old 4 cylinder TDI or something and then cut the end off and weld a 1.3 exhaust mani plate on hahah

look for winstons mk1 scirroco thread on e 38 as hes running a solid lifter engine boosted but hes running turbo but should give you some ideas on things

luke

^^but that assumes the ports are spaced the same on both engines. I think it would be possible to modify a standard cast exhaust mani if your on a mega budget. May mean mounting the turbo upside down, but thats nothing you can't bodge!

I have everything for a turbo set up running R5 carb bar the dizzy and boost piping. Also have a spare K03 you could have for a ton, bun all this G-lader stuff off!

Seriously though, I don't think there's much point spending money on a half arsed attempt at boosting an old engine when a set of bikecarbs and a four branch will likely give you similar results. Just be patient and save for proper set up, that way you can get a proper set up earlier, or spend your beer tokens on getting the rest of the car sorted. No matter what you think, you will spend more than you plan to

i just want to do it to see hw cheap you can boost a polo lol, not after shit loads of power

id be interested in the turbo if i could get a manifold ect, plus the carb

I know what you want to do, but what I'm saying is it worth it. I know you want to do a proper set up evetually, so my advice would be to buy things you can use in the future too e.g. buy a charger now you would use on your proper set up. This is what I'm doing, although after reading about 'charging, I'm moving towards EFI for the ignition side of things. Will probably try the carb out first as i now have it (with a GK inlet :-) ) and iron any major problems out with that set up, moving onto efi when I know more about it, but in the end I will lose money this way that I should have spent on EFI etc. I started with the intention of it being cheap, but without it even fully building the thing I've gotten through 3 engines, 2 turbos and a set of internals!

yeahh thats why i was cncidering a g charger lol,

i wanted to run proper G40 setup with a mechanical head engine anyway but i dont think thats possible as id need all the sensors ect, how much different is a gt loom to a g40?

will i have to change my interior loom? or do all the engine looms just connect straight up? this is where i will get stuck lol

Edited by erixtar1992

i wanna know this about the looms for other reasons myself as i have a plan of action for my car
