Along the lines of some sort of sensor .. I thought lambda but then read it was diesel :/

I'm assuming by that comment i haven't got one ? I've not looked yet

south wales bridgend I'm in :( yep holding all its coolant i do mix the coolant with water never affected it before

Nah, they should? Anyway, when it's cold is it not under a closed loop system anyway? So it rules it out. Lambda would ping up on the engine lights anyway!

What about once it's heated up for say, a minute? 2 minutes? Or only once it's right up to temp? If it still runs when cold then it's not the gasket or any previous work..

The only thing that's affected by temp is the temp sensor, it caused actual havoc when mine failed! They're cheap to replace, i'd fire one of them in first.

Even go and chat up the local VW garage and they'll scan it for you for buttons..

Various running problems (poor performance, engine stutters, difficult to start).

The ESP lamp is on, the engine runs in emergency operation and the following fault memory entry is logged in the engine control unit:

Vehicles with distributor injection pump:

17656 Injection start control, control difference

Vehicles with pump injector:

Cylinder 1 - 4 below/above control limit

Technical background

Because of dirt in the fuel tank system or ignored service intervals the fuel filter can be clogged up.

Production change

No change.

Measure

• Check the fault memory of the engine control unit and make sure that the vehicle has the above problem.

• Make sure that there is enough and correct fuel.

• Check the system for fuel leaks.

• If no fault is found, replace the fuel filter.

If the problem persists after replacing the filter, proceed according to the guided fault finding.

So you unplug it and nothing changes? Check the wiring from ECU to sensor

checked that and its fine all the way back to the ecu!

my mate came down with vag comand found

17978 engine start blocked by immbolizer....... but this is the only code..?

I'm assuming theres no fuel gettin to the car? anyway of bi-passing this

i have reaplced the temp sensor with no luck :( starts when cold but refuses to re-start when warm

dodgy fuel then..... but why does it start when its cold? ill try replacing the fuel filter but i dont think it would help

Do you have other keys with your ignition key? as sometimes they can block the key fob transponder signal causing immobilizer problems

yes i do have another key.... but again why would it do it when its warm? strange i know ill try my spare key now and let you know !!! appricate the help guys!1

explain..

The fuel gets warm and vapourizes in the fuel lines making an air block, I've only known it occour on pre cold war petrol engines though.

Intact I'm pretty sure that's the fuel regulators job to.stop it, so if it is vapour. Then is say your regs faulty.

I've just found another possible cause and it would fit with restarting when hot, if the flap does'nt return to the fully open position

The intake manifold flap is closed for approx. 3 seconds when stopping engine and then opens again. This reduces the stop jolt.

Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

◆ → Hand vacuum pump V.A.G 1390

◆ Test box V.A.G 1598/31

◆ Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or multimeter V.A.G 1715

◆ Adapter set V.A.G 1594

◆ Current flow diagram

Checking function

‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.

‒ Switch off ignition.

‒ Observe positioning lever on intake manifold flap (2nd person required).

‒ The intake manifold flap must, after switching off ignition, close and after approx. 3 seconds open again.

If change-over does not occur, the following checks must be carried out.

‒ Check intake manifold flap change-over mechanics for freedom of movement. To do this operate rods by hand.

‒ Check function of vacuum positioning element with hand vacuum pump V.A.G 1390.

‒ Check vacuum pipes for correct connection.

If no fault is found in the mechanical components:

‒ Check intake manifold flap change-over valve.

Test sequence

‒ Pull off connector on intake manifold flap change-over valve => Fitting locations overview, Page 23-4.

‒ → Measure resistance between change-over valve contacts.

Specification: 25 ... 45 ω

If the specification is not obtained:

‒ Renew intake manifold flap change-over valve.

If the specification is obtained:

‒ → Set multimeter to measure voltage and connect to contacts 1 and 2 of disconnected connector from intake manifold flap change-over valve.

‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.

Specification: Battery voltage

‒ Switch off ignition.

‒ The voltage value must fall to 0 V after approx. 3 seconds.

If the voltage values do not change as described:

‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness.

‒ → Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit using current flow diagram.

Contact 1+ socket 1 and 2

Contact 2+ socket 81

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ω

‒ Additionally check wires for short to one another, to vehicle earth and to battery positive.

Specification: ∞ω

If no fault is detected in the wiring:

‒ Renew Diesel direct injection system control unit (J248) => Page 23-85.

ahhh that kinda makes sence....... so when its hot that flap isnt opening all the way??

kit for a vw is being built as we speek kinda unversial hydro's for most cars :) u will get your tenna when u suck my balls bitch!
