Haven't had a chance to get the car on a ramp yet but just seeing if this is a common problem. Only an intermittent fault at present but is getting more frequent. If braking gradually and getting harder on the pedal, just before the car stops there will be a loud click from the front end.

Brakes are all fine, has had new lower arms on both sides (noise was present before these were changed) Just trying to get some things to check before I get it on a ramp at work. Car is a 97 6n Polo 1.4 8v.

This noise may or may not be coming from the brakes.

Among the possible causes are:

1) Loose wheel bolts. (Always check the simple things first!)

2) Brake pads loose in the carrier.

3) Brake carrier bushes/pins worn.

4) Drive shaft joint(s) worn.

5) Drive shaft/hub splines worn. (If this is the case, the central nut may or may not be loose.)

I know the wheel nuts are tight as I always torque them down when I remove them. I must admit I was leaning towards pads loose in the carriers or carrier bolts becoming loose.

All the driveshafts seem fine however there is a small amount of greese on the OSF driveshaft gaitor (may have answered my own question there)

I think I'll just strip the front brakes down at the weekend and if it continues, may have to consider an OS outer CV joint.

Are these available seperately or is the complete driveshaft assy?

Just an update if anybody ever searches for a similar issue, it was the brake pads. Took them out cleaned them up, greased the pads and sliders, jobs a good 'un. Easy fix :-)
