Project Open Air 'Elmo'

Featured Replies

So after 2 black 6n2 Gti's and a dragon dreen 6n 16v, i've ended up buying a red 1.4 16v 6n Openair. This wasn't what i planned on getting next but it just kinda happened. Its covered 125,000 miles so as you can imagine it does have a few issues. First thing that was noticable was the fact the paint had gone abit pink but nothing a quick mop over couldn't sort out. It has a problem with the throttle body, plugged in my Vas machine from work turns out there is a short circuit in the wiring. The passenger window also pops off its brackets when it goes down but its a easy fix.

Bad bits over with, it came with

coilovers,

HID kit,

6n2 Rear lights,

Goodridge stainless steel brake lines,

EPC Green Stuff Pads

Drilled and Grooved Front Discs

Pipercross Replacement Panel Filter

SIGMA CAT 1 ALARM SYSTEM W/ 2FOBS

I also have this Arc Gti engine in my garage from a previous polo, so i'm going to have a little play and do something i've never tried before.

Cheers for looking.

Craig.

Been busy the last two days.

Managed to get the 1.4 lump out of the car, ready to be stripped down. While doing this i found that the exhaust manifold has a nasty split in it :(.

Then put the car back together so i can roll it back outside.

Also managed to get the nasty 6n dash out ready to have the 6n2 dash put in.

Before i put the new dash in i need to adapt the wiring loom so the window switches work on the door and i need to pop down the scrappy to get some heater pipes so it connects up properly.

Started to stripped down the wiring loom.

Sorry about the bad iphone pictures.

Managed to get abit more done today after work. Stripped off the head off the 1.4, checked it for valve damage, i believe each set has a valve damaged.

Also when stripping it i noticed there is alot different between the 1.4 and 1.6 gti inlet manifold. For one it looks like a brake pipe to the servo comes out off it and then under where the throttle body connects there is a pipe which goes around the front off the engine, what is it for and how do i get around it if i want to run the gti inlet manifold?

Next is to ring around to find out how much its going to be to get the head skimmed and valves replaced.

Nice Progress mate! Will be great when done :)

That pipe you've mentioned is part of the EGR system. Never seen a GTI inlet manifold though so couldn't tell you how to go about it!

great progress- any tips for removing the Dash mate?

looks real clean man.

Cheers bud, ahh okay, the gti inlet is actually quite bare, really doesn't have anything on it.

Yeah lol, when removing the 6n centre dash there is two screws behind the centre vents which the vents need to be 'swung open' to get too, took me ages to find them, everything else is quite straight forward

the mk5 gti inlet is downgrade..... the 6n item is better flowing so I'm led to believe.

Ahh okay so it would be easier and better to use the 6n one then.

looks real clean man.

Cheers its got a few dents and chips but a good base to work with.

Use the gti manifold but the 16v injectors and jobs a good'n :)

So all these mk5/mk4 avy/afh hybrids could use the GTi manifold? I thought it said in that conversion thread the head and inlet are better flowing? Maybe not, it was a while ago i read it and I'm not arsed about 16v's so never payed much attention

Lol I'm not sure on which is better, will just have to try both to find out lol.

Should be going down the workshop later to get abit more done, got my new ariel seal today so I can finally stop the rain seeping in lol.

Craig

The gti manifold is less restrictive, but with the gti injectors was making it bog, but with the mk4 injectors it was 100x better.

Thanks for saying about the injectors lol I was going to use the gti ones but won't bother now lol.

Does it matter that I'm using the arc gti engine instead of the avy??

Craig

I wouldnt imagine so as the inlet manifolds would all be the same i would asume

Did abit more, forgot about the ariel seal so will probably do that at the weekend.

So stripped the gti lump down

The two heads

Gti head

IMG_0532.jpg

Turns out the Arc head doesn't have the correct bolts either, they are too short like the avy engine.

IMG_0531.jpg

Have ordered the correct bolts from GSF, so it now sits like this waiting

Right so i finally got down to the workshop and actually did some work. Did a 'test' build of how the engine is going to be, so i can make a list of parts now needed, before sending the head off.

My engine set up will be;

1.6 Arc Bottom End including whole set up,

1.6 Arc headgasket,

1.6 Oil Cooler set up,

1.4 16v Afh Head,

1.6 Inlet Manifold,

1.4 Afh throttle body with L-shaped bracket for cable,

1.6 exhaust manifold (standard atm but probably going to use 4-2-1)

1.6 fuel rail with 1.4 injectors (will be trying out both set of injectors thou)

1.0 polo head bolts,

using 1.4 relay roller but need to drill it out to the size of the 1.6,

cambelt and tensioners from 1.4,

Water pump, alternator, power steering pump, aux belt and tensioners from the 1.4,

Looks like this:

IMG_0538.jpg

Time to strip it back down and send the head off.
