bike carbs pissing fuel out of overflows

Featured Replies

Strange.

where were they wrong?

no i mean i swapped the fuel inlet pipe to the pump for the return pipe

for some reason its sorted it? return pipe must have been causing a little too much back pressure?

Unless it was the wrong way round on the tank.

Glad its sorted, any chance of a the customary ITS RUNNING FTW!!! Video?:lol::lol:

its not sorted yet lol it has a major air leak. i think its from the manifold!

i sprayed some maintenance spray on the middle runners where they join to the head and the revs picked up!

is it because i tightened the outside bolts before the middle? should i do it the other way around?

Did you fit a gasket?

yep! brand new one!

Is it a home fabbed manifold , the welding can warp them slightly, my converted Gt manifold has 3 gaskets in it

yeah home brew jobbie, its by far the best but it should do the job hopefully!

ah really? shit son! haha.

i think i may have stripped one of the threads, the bolts i used are a smidge too short for how tight i did them.

shall i tighten middle first?

Iv always used a sealant on the inlet mani with my carbs instead of a gasket, the stuff that's oil/fuel resistant and lambda sensor safe.

well better bolts before you strip anything else , worth a try from the middle i suppose , unless you can get the manifold off and get if flat , sheet of sandpaper on a plate of glass would work .

If not i just got 2 sheets of gasket paper and made my own gaskets

i dont have any though haha. used it all on my first bike carb attempt on the old mk2 when it had a 1.3

Try tightening the bolts evenly, do them all finger tight first then do them up bit by bit until they are quite tight then, start in the middle if you want, if you have a torque wrench torque the bolts up to 20nm

Check that the flange is flat on the mating face, next time you make a mani try it by bolting the flange to the head first and welding on the runners from there this will help make sure the flange doesn't warp when welding.

I'm guessing if you have stripped the thread because the bolt was not long enough then the hole should accept a longer bolt because you wont have stripped much of the thread, if you can't get a bolt to start on the thread, get a counter sink drill bit and de bur the hole a bit more, then re tap the hole this should repair the first bit of thread, then make sure the bolt you use is long enough to go past where you have previously stripped.

I usually use bolts that have enough thread that will screw in, good rule to use is 2 times the bolts diameter of screwing thread for screwing into ali, so if you got 10mm thick flange and m8 bolt use 25mm bolt.

I made an inch thick steel plate to bolt my manifold to when welding haha :)

ITS FIXEDDDDD!!!!!!!!!

i had a look over the manifold and there was a fat gap between it and the head so it was pissing air in!!

then i remembered i pinched some bolts from work for the 16v and luckily i didnt use them! so now there on, tightened it up from the middle outwards and now its fine!

started straight up and ran fine!

sorted throttle pedal out and took it for a drive, IT SOUNDS SO GOOOODDDDD WAAAAHHH haaha its pretty nippy too!!

thanks for all your help guys its much appreciated. there will be a video in my build thread later :)

Fucking hell! You bodge your's together with lines on the wrong way, stripping bolts and using a dodgey mani, and I'm still stuck, months later, trying to sort my fuelling. Fair play, but I need to pull my finger out my fat ass!

My gasket's made from an industrial rubber floor mat, it's about 5mm thick unclamped

I used some gasket paper and made my own :)

pissed off to the max.

got in car this morning started straight up! then the dreaded fuel leak started again! :@

I'm thinking that i may have it piped up wrong? i have the inlet in the bottom as it should be but the two t pieces at the top of the carbs, could i use them as a return instead? as i seems like when the carbs are full its bypassing something and returning out of those? or is that wrong?

ALSO, WHERE CAN I GET CBR600 SPARES???? IDEALLY TODAY!!! i snapped one of the brown fuel inlet t pieces. :@

getting annoyed now.

was an accident they happen. lol

need one today preferably what can i do? :(

Is it broken or leaking

  • Author

it snapped.

right.. if you like pikey fixes, youll LOVE this.

beholddd

one snapped inlet t piece...

one fixed t piece

somehow it doesent leak either LOL

anywayss. after taking the carbs apart, checking floats bla bla, fuel is still overflowing. are the top pipes deffinately just an overflow or are they a return?

haha fair play on the fix!

haha fair play on the fix!

best think i could think of that had a chance of working! lol

daymm i just noticed my red fuel hoses are in that pic.. i was saving that update for tomorrow when the rest of them arrive haha

mate that looks dodge! They aren't an overflow at all on top, I don't know who started that rumour. They are the ram air inlets for the fuel bowls.

your fuel pressure must still be too high, has anyone else used the standard pump?

it is indeed! but its only a very temporary fix!

god knows, surely there shouldnt be fuel coming out of there at all then! i used the standard pump before on my old 1.3 and it was fine!

not sure i can use a regulator on a mechanical pump can i?

Its that 3bar mechanical pump coming to bite you in the arse.

but the electric injection pump only runs at 1.1bar.
