Oak Green Mk2F Polo AFH on Carbs

Not sure mate it's hard to say, which carbs do you have?

& them balancers both do the same thing, the more expensive one is meant to be a little better, not sure why unless it's just smoother because it's liquid, the gauges jump around but have an adjustable restrictor in line to smooth it out

they are yamaha fazer 600cc carbs and I had 150 jets put in them by Bogg for the ABD.

There are also these.

And these.

The two balance units above seem pretty good as I can leave my piper cross filter on, and they will be tuned to the air filter also, were as the weber synchrometer will require the air filter off.

So once the carbs are balanced, how do I use the AEM wide band to get the car running great ?

Just ignore 90% of the internet lol! Nobody has issues with running temps unless something's fucked

I've told you....

Not sure mate; you usually have to take a blank out to screw the gauge in, have you got 4 tapins on your inlet manifold to run vacuum advance or just one for the brake servo?

Well all the AFR gauge will do is tell you your air fuel ratio, giving you an indication of fuelling, there's "rules of thumb" with ideal ratios, but all engines work differently, some people are happy running them leaner, others richer to be safer but too rich can do more bad than good.

Ignition plays a big part too, ideally a RR is still the best way as you can see an actual change of what's happening where

Ah right , so the pilot jet screws are the ones that are turned when balancing the carbs? And then when you mentioned changing the main jets, that's experimenting with sizes ?

Yes I only have the brake servo coming off my manifold .

That 1st pic I posted of is it the pipes for the balancer , I think they are , as I have just seen an exploded diagram of the carbs and they had a rubber cap on each of them , and I have watched plenty of videos on you tube now and a lot of these pipes have them rubber caps on , I did also see some were screw in .

No, balancing the carbs means balancing the air flow and that's done by the little screw-stops on the throttle linkage to adjust the position of the butterflies.

No max mine were out of balance and always have been. But its never caused me an issue so meh

Keihin or w/e the spelling is 145s seem about right for an afh

We checked yours at poloshow and they were pretty close?

Keihins are smaller IIRC, like a 150 dynojet is like a 175 keihin or something

Well vw festival was great this year , full weekend was good. How ever with no club polo stand or even a polo3 stand this year , that was a bit disappointing. Only saw about 5 polos . Shame mine couldn't be tuned in time :-( I have bough a carb balancer , 4 gauge one. Hopefully it will be here off eBay by Wednesday. I'm going to give the balancing a go , £47 it was .

What are you doing regards setting up the carbs fuelling? Are you gonna get a wideband system?

Bogg Bros setting it up again

Bogg Bros setting it up again

We should so start our own "setting up company", dont need a rolling road one bit.

You do IMO, I think you can do pretty well on the road, but for fine tuning I dont think your arse is accurate enough to pick up a few HP or NM here and there from being 0.2 AFR's leaner, or a degree or two ignition here and there,

Fair enough mapping cars which youre doing to rules of thumb and mapping to be safe, or ones that det before max torque so you can just advance it til it dets and knock it back...

Yes I'm off to Bogg on Thursday , how ever I do want to be able to do it my self. So I will use the balancer, so I know how to balance carbs, and it's at least balanced fir the 35 mile journey to bogg. I will then go go bogg and have them do the fueling side and pay attention lol. When I can buy a wide band I will and plug it in and see how I go to fine time it and learn.

My carb balancer came from Ebay, £47. I've tried using it but nothing has happened, I have put that down to air leaks from the inlet manifold rubbers.

Here is a pic of how my bay is looking at the min. I still need to weld on the brackets to hold my custom scuttle pan.

afhbaywithbalancer_zpsc6d383ea.jpg

And here is a pic of the polo after a wash today, and I have fitted my Desmo roof rack, which has been powder coated and put back together with all new bolts and screws.

polowithroofrack_zpsc8d60dbc.jpg

I drove the polo 35 miles to Bogg today and 35 miles back obvs lol and attempted to have it tuned, this how ever did not happen, this is how I have found out there are air leaks in the inlet manifold rubbers. The blue rubbers from Bogg on my old manifold were to short, so I bought new black hose and cut them down so they were longer, how ever it turns out the internal diameter is to large, so today I have ordered some more with a smaller diameter, and I will go back.

There was again a small oil drip from the new rocker cover gasket, every time I try to sort it, there is another bloody one! Driving me insane, bloody never had an issue with the 8 valve rockers.

I kept the car under 40k revs and probably only went as high as 50 mph, the car felt good, but the exhaust sounds mean as fook hehe

I really want some fogs, an bin off them blanking covers , they look awful. I May even cut them out and replace them with mesh.

I really do likethis simple and sutble on the outside but bonkers under the bonnet

  • Author

Lol cheers bud, got to keep the polo looking origional ant you, them bonnets that make them look like pugs an body kits ain't my thing at all

  • Author

So I think I've sorted the air leaks in the inlet hose , but I can't tell because the carb balancer I got doesnt seem to be working on the outlets on my carbs . The hose is 35 mm from 40 mm an mega tight . I want to book in for bogg bros next week , but my tax runs out tomoz , so I got my paper work out to get tax . And my bloody MOT ran out on Monday ! So can't drive the car to bogg with no tax or MOT , can't MOT with no tuning due to emissions , ant tax with no MOT !

Do Boggs do MOTs? Lol

  • Author

Lol I haven't asked, how ever a friend of a friend is now Doing the mot on monday for £60 and he will also tell me whats wrong , iff any thing . So I can then tax the car , an get to bogg. I've been busy moving house , I've now got the car in the garage , it fits with abit of space to get round it , and I have an adjacent room as a work shop, no more work on the road !

doesnt every MOT station tell you whats wrong if it fails ? lol

hopfully it passes though!

  • Author

Well yes , but a Bodge mot , may not. They could just pass it an not even look at it couldnt they :-).

It's done now any way , it passed obvs but only things wrong were emmissions lol , and play in a rear wheel bearing which is a shock as I replaced them.

But before bogg again I need to sort my timing end crank seal , it's bloody leaking , so engine has to be raised :-(, I guess there could have been more wrong with a conversion like this on the plus side .

Common man! need to see this running!
