Cheers for the advice bro, I will check it out. I haven't done much work on the polo since I sorted the tax and MOT out. I noticed a minor oil drip from my timing end oil seal, which was new from VW, so I am now having to raise the engine to address the issue before Bogg brothers. I purchased an engine hoist off Ebay for £136 and received it the other day, can now have big boy tools since i have a garage now :-).

I had my first semi pro cage fight on Saturday in Durham, this is the reason why I haven't done much work on the car, I have been busy training and cutting weight to get to 78kg. I won the Fight to, Round one, 1 min 1 second in by triangle.

Here are some pictures of my new workshop and garage, it needs some work, but is awesome allready.

Bay is looking sweet now, just need to sort out my custom scuttle pan.

Bloody jack failed again! I guess you get what you pay for, so a £60 wolf 4 ton jack , its a big boy, 435mm of height.

The last earth cable has been replaced, £5 from Euro, all four are done now.

4-2-1 manifold is sorted out too, I grinded off the air intake tube, much better.

Completely forgot to add the stage of fixing the oil seal, and timing it up correctly.

Engine out again, getting pretty good at this now ha.

So much room! love it in here, man cave!

Oil seal done again, bloody about £20 from VW, oiled it up, and cut a coke bottle up to use a sheet of thin plastic to slide it smoothly over the crank end and into its housing. I then used a large socket piece to drive it in.

And finally the timing belt is on all correct, what a ball ache that was!

Finally some pics - lots of em! Lots of work!

Blimey you like paint, but it looks really well so far. Couple of strange colour choices but it's all about making it yours.

The steering wheel i'm sure is from another MK2F but i don't know year/model.

Steering wheel from MK2f M reg ish Boulevard Coupe

Bogg Brothers was a good run for you, Unlike my air leaks!!

Lol, I know. Happened to me last time . At least we know what to do to fix yours though.

I now need to rebuild the bottom end I think , the engine don't sound to healthy .

Massive work your doing hope it works out well

  • Author

Yer well , it needs doing , iff I want to justify the rest of the project. Engine compression test unit came today :-)

Lol I have ordered a mechanics stethoscope to help diagnose this noise ! Didn't know such a thing existed :-)

  • Author

So I did the compression test on the AFH today, and the results were:

Dry test:

Cylinder 1 = 85 psi Cylinder 2 = 75 psi Cylinder 3 = 65 psi Cylinder 4 = 70 psi

Wet test:

Cylinder 1 = 80 psi Cylinder 2 = 80 psi Cylinder 3 = 75 psi Cylinder 4 = 75 psi

So what does every one think ?

Any one know the ratios for an AFH?

Any one want to do theirs to compare for me ?

Edited by dart_strife

Did you do that with the throttle wide open?

you don't need the throttle wide open for it to work and like I said to you they should be reading over 160 psi

I've tested a few AFH engines and also tested 2 hybrids all of them reading minimum of 180 psi and one 220 psi with all the cylinders reading well within the tolerances of each other

the one AFH I had ring failure on was reading 45 and 55 on cylinders 1 and 4 and 140 and 145 on cylinders 2 and 3

Did mine both ways. Wide open was more like what i was expecting

Did you do that with the throttle wide open?

Literally 100% correct. Mine were half as much as they should be with the throttles shut, like 60psi, with them wide open it was 175psi

I've never done it with throttle wide open and have always got good figures i just let it turn over a little longer if anything

Was this with an EFI set-up or carbs dude?

Iv always been taught/shown to do it at what, and also not sit cranking for ages to let it build up; it should virtually reach it's maximum value within 2-3 cranks

that was with both efi and carbs on various cars now and it only takes 4-5 cranks to get to the right pressure if they are good anyways

i know that efi will do this without W0T as it generally has a large plenum after the throttle plate but i can see the reasoning with carbs to do it

next time i do it though i will try it on W0T and see

I've never been taught how to do it i just learnt myself and the way i did it worked so i carried on

No my throttle was not wide open , how ever I cranked them over untill the reading would not go higher

  • Author

Actually now I remember , I did have my foot down on the pedal all the way each time. I received some info off a lad at VW, that the psi reading should be 105 new. But I don't really believe this , as Pete says different from actual readings off his engines , bottom end rebuild time :-)

Edited by dart_strife

I'd expect at least 150psi, should be higher still I reckon.

Do a leakage test

  • Author

I corrected my reply above regarding my compression readings, I did my Wet test, which were the 2nd readings. Is that a leakage test?

While the engine is out again, as a rebuild is likely I am going to do the below jobs.

I am going to buy myself a MIG welder and grinder, while the engine is out I want to do the following jobs:

Remove slam panel, have it powder coated, and fix it in a way that it can be removed easily for removing the engine ect

Smooth bay

Remove fire panel

Battery in the boot

Weld in new jacking points

Under seal under the car and wheel arches

Add a flexi pipe connector to my exhaust manifold down pipe to center

Weld in carbon canister hole

Weld on a stainless top to the radiator

Possibly incorperate bike carbs air box

Add my vauxhall front brake upgrade and 22.2 mm master cylinder

Re-do front brake lines

powder coat rear beam

Trying to think on any thing else?

intercooler? wtf ?!??!

Bin doing some reading , and some people have fitted them to aspirated engines , to keep them cooler . But have been reading a few negative comments about pressure drop along the whole system . Need to think of ways to keep the AFH cooler , some lads have mentioned high temperature gauges , unless that's down to being a bit pikey with parts ?
