Any computery people on here ?

Featured Replies

As above , i have a HP compaq mini netbook , i was using it today with the battery and on the power cord as the battery doesnt really last very long anymore , however i noticed that it wasnt charging anymore and that i was running on battery power . Computer was working fine until the battery died but now will not turn on with the battery or the mains lead connected , any ideas ? but i fear the worse .

Charger appears to work , f i push the on switch the orange charging light blinks.

Cheers in advance Mark

My laptop continually fucks up because it's old and shit, tried taking the batt out?

As above remove the battery and plug it into the wall, if that doesn't work then it's probably the charger.

lol yeah tried it just battery , just mains and both , feckin thing

Mine won't work without the batt, but if I take it out with charger unplugged too, stick batt in and plug in it comes to life

mmmmmmm , does your charger get warm even if its not plugged in ?

How would it possibly? Or do you mean plugged into wall and not laptop?

yes dear , plugged into the wall but not into the computer , must have a transformer in it , just wondered if it would get warm with no load ,my multimeter isnt here at the minute

yo mark, sounds like the charger or the power connector on the laptop, of which it's most likely the charger.

Stick up a pic of the label on the charger and the end connection and I'll check if I have any if I match the spec knocking about

Most transformer boxes I have only get warm when in use, they can be plugged in ok. The non generic ones dont tend to and get toasty regardless. There was a documentary about fake chargers exploding, I have taken the risk before but I prefer to buy oe spec items.

i have the same problem, my charger is nackered so it only works in a certain position. pain in the ass! if you move my laptop it stops charging!

Electrical tape :p

thats my answer to everything. dont encourage me

No worries mate. I'll have a look. If it does die, don't fret your data can always be salvaged if you haven't got a backup. If alls working again make a backup when you can :)

Eric trust you to come in ere with an insight to your life on a trailer park, you musta been a redneck in a former life lad haha. Priceless!

On a related note however, my first polo a g40 was bought on eBay, and my Lappy that had the memory held in place by several bits of cardboard sandwiched underneath the back plate. If you touched the table it would my crash. My mate did it with 5 seconds to go in the auction. I coulda killed him haha! Half an hour later when I finally managed to fire up the Quattro, I found out I had won it! He was spared a beating haha and so began my polo saga!

 , times I've been last minute sniping on ebay , then it logs you out  ill let you know how i get on . On a similar note I've got an old laptop with a suspected failed hard drive , have been told it doesnt spin , any way of getting anything from that ?

You can get the data taken off it but unless there's something vitally important on there forget it, its not a job you can do at home because any trace of dust or static will kill the platter. And its very expensive.

its worth taking the drive out and shoving it into an external usb caddy, see if another machine will read it, chances are if its shafted and wont read in the bios, or clicks like fuck, as above just get rid and take the lesson to back up in future

i have a caddy here i can either send over to you, or you can send it up here (ideally just the drive but the whole lappy if ness, the drive should be easy enough to access and remove)

if you're getting no power to the laptop, and the charger works (get a voltmeter on it) then it could be the power jack in the laptop which has broken. this happened to my mums laptop

:-D Was the charger in the end , panic over  like fixing cars always the simple things  .

Thanks to all who replied , and Saf regarding the previous laptop it has been broken for some time and luckily we had backed up most of the important things , however there are some photos on there of the little one if you fancied having a bash at it ? What shows you at this year ? Cheers Mark

Probably not the best choice of wording mark

I feel it makes a lot of sense to use something like datavault or dropbox to back up me files, unless its me porno stash, don't want me missus finding that. just a thought to avoid loss of files again and you can then access then from any computer by logging into your account. or you could buy a load of memory sticks, you can get a 32GB one for just over a tenner on ebay.

 worryingly i do have some slightly dodgy photos of you on my phone

Cheers Leon its something i must do sooner rather than later .

HP's have notoriously shit power supplies.

My misses had one which had two replacements and my step son has replaced his 4 times.
