Evening all just wondering if anyone has had the pleasure of fitting a oil pressure gauge to their 40.i had one once but bottled it and never fitted it.so if anyone has fitted one would they be kind enough to tell me how to fit it and what kind of Gauge to buy thanks all

There are two types of oil pressure gauge: 1) Borden gauge (mechanical - connects by a pipe)

2) Electric (has a sensor unit on the engine and connects by a cable)

Note: With either of the above, you also need to connect a wire from the other instrument lights to the actual gauge - at least you do if you wish to be able to see it at night.

If one is not included with the gauge when you buy it, it pays to get a 'T' piece to fit to the engine, that way you can keep the warning light and warning buzzer.

Depending upon where you wish to site the gauge, you will probably also need a mounting bracket, also the necessary pipe or cable.

Remove existing oil pressure sensor from cylinder head, in its place, fit the 'T' piece.

To the 'T' piece attach either the new sensor (electric type) or pipe (mechanical type).

To the other port on the 'T' piece, fit the existing sensor.

Route the pipe or cable through the bulkhead and attach to the new instrument. Also connect the wire for the bulb from the existing instrument lights.

If you use the Borden gauge type, it is best NOT to bleed air out of the pipe - oil pressure from the engine will compress the air which is trapped in the pipe and the gauge will work correctly on that.

Thank you for the reply,which is the better out of the 2 the electrical One sounds easier to fit as I would be worried about kinking the copper pipe in the bulkhead.But will an electrical gauge hook straight up To my g40 I'm ok with the wiring for the lighting it's just the sensor part that kinda confuses me

I've fitted a mechanical gauge and wished I had gone electrical! Feeding an oil pipe into the cabin is a pain and will make a mess if it leaks, also mine is really noisy for some reason lol.

It is your choice of which you use.

There is little difference in the fitting of them, as the mechanical ones have semi-rigid nylon pipe, not copper, so they will stand a bit of abuse, just don't kink it.

There is little chance of oil leaking once that it is fitted.

If the gauge is noisy, it may be that the pipe is full of oil, if this is the case, just disconnect both ends and blow the oil out into a rag.

I've got a mechanical one (not on a G but it is in a polo), fitting was easy just remember to use a bit of ptfe tape on the threads of the joins. The only problem I have ever had was when swapping the engine I trapped the pipe and crushed it a bit, but this was my own stupid fault for not putting it in a safe place
