can anyone suggest what's happening here...

Featured Replies

I have transplanted this engine from a car that had been sitting for seven years!

in my ownership the engine has sat for a further three years

everything on it has been replaced (bar the timing belt and the water pump- no point until i get it running right)

I was having issues with oil been thrown out of the breather pipe into the top of the carb.

cleaned out that hose and did an oil change to find FIVE LITRES of oil in there!

the car used to idle fine when we tested it before taking the car to bits

every part i can think of has been replaced.

leads

dizzy cap/arm

plugs

fuel filter

fuel pump

coil pack

it is driving me nuts,

i'm not very mechanically minded and living in the middle of nowhere isn't helping, and i really need to get the car going sometime soon...

where should i be checking for bad earths? front and rear

what other things could be causing it to run like shit...

if anyone could upload youtube links to show what i need to be looking for that would be great

the clicnking is a loose exhaust clamp, it was jumping about underneath..

thanks guys

it is a lumpy idle, it does hunt for a wee while then it just dies on itself..

Could be 101 things on a GT. Here's a quick and easy way to check your engine is earthed well enough. Stick a lump lead between the block and the neagtive terminal on the battery.

could be an air leak around the carb or inlet mani as burt had this trouble on his at gti fest last year

Am I missing something here?

You have found that oil is being thrown out of the breather pipe, yet you are looking for an electrical fault.

With 5l of oil in the sump, it is quite likely that the crankshaft has been contacting the oil and throwing it all over the place.

It could also be that there has been some rusting in the cylinders during its ten years of standing, or even rusting on a valve stem or valve seat which is preventing the valve from fully closing.

I would recommend that you carry out a compression test before you do much else, don't expect it to be perfect, but if there are any great differences in cylinder pressure, it would pay to investigate the cause of this before you go much further.

If there are only slight differences in compression pressure, I would tend to try running it for a couple of hundred miles or so and then re-test it.

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick, but I can't see (from what you are saying) why you are looking for electrical problems.

Regards.

is this you just running it in your drive? Sounds like it needs a good thrash out a private road etc

the oil in the breather pipe has been sorted- it was due to having too much oil in the car.

this is what we got to in the end of it, i think its an air leak or dirty air inlet, probably full of oil... what do you guys think

as said it could be a number of things, i'd check these things in this order though first:

-that your dizzy is the correct mpi one, the spi one will cause it to run poorly in general, includling a lumpy idle

-Inlet manifold gasket and t/b gasket

-all the vacuum hoses etc

-blue temp sensor

-air flow meter

-lambda sensor

and the list goes on, that is all going from the viewpoint that its electrical/fueling, like caretakerplus said it could be more mechanical related since its been stood a long time, a compression test is a nice simple thing to do.

It seems to me that among other things, you are getting way too much fuel in there when it gets warmed up, I would think that the air around that tail pipe smells like neat petrol!

This being the case, follow the list that VolksKid83 has given you.
