So this is a random un related polo question i know...

Me and a work collegue have just been discussing if it would be in anyway possible to convert his 54 audi A2 1.6fsi to a 6 speed gearbox?

I know lots of gearbox bolt patterns are similair between early polos and wonderws if it would be the same for such newer cars? Therefore maybe making this possible?!?

Watch out as on my 52 clio the 5 speed I've got has a single mass flywheel but if the car would have come with a 6 speed gbox it would have a dual mass flywheel which obvious if it's the same sort of case you would need to change all that too and dual mass flywheels ain't cheap as ideas you would wanna go new due to part of the flywheel being a replacement part when you renew the clutch if you get me

Oh and just to add the easiest way to find out if it's do able is to check what gbox options the car came with from show room / factory as if it was an optional extra from factory it is more than likely possible to swap over

Thats interesting and no it wasnt a choice from the factory at all, but there are cars from the same years with 6 speed gearboxs on fsi engines...

Well this is why he wanted me to find out, if it was going to be a simple case of a gearbox from a different model a shift linkage etc from something else then it was game on, money isnt too much of an issue so long as it would work properly and not be a bodge

He drives to southern france/italy every year and would like the extra gear for economy. And dont say why doesnt he get another car, he had a mk5 golf gti with dsg and still went back to the A2. If people didnt try stuff for the hell of it then there would be no such thing as the modifying seen!

He would like to try it and thats that, ime asking if it may be possible not for your opinion :)

lupo GTI 6spd will fit the motor as it has the correct bellhousing - your problem will potentially the width of the gearbox - theres an extra cog on the end - is there space for the wider box in the a2?

I have done some more research and the lupo gti box had popped up a few times on the A2OC as it appears that a few people have already done it :)

I presume that the Lupo 6 speed box would also fit straight on to a 6n2 GTi?

I would think its fairly easy. Id like a 6spd on the variant but I dont think there is a 6spd version of my 'box.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Lupo GTi box fitted the A2 though - its a similarly small sized car so the box would have to be small enough to fit the Lupo as is.

I would check that the 6th actually any lower that the 5th in his current box? Some manufactures who have gone from 5 speed to 6 speed have kept the final ratio and just made the ones inbetween closer so you gain in town driving rather than have 6th as an economy cruising gear.

from research so far, the 6 speed boxes available to fit give a drop of around 500rpm on the motorway, which over a 2000mile journey save a fair bit of fuel!

The gearbox codes are all in ETKA so you can compare ratios to see what you gain. (or lose!)

I guess worst case you could swap the engine and gearbox from a lupo. It just depends on what type of gearbox it has already. If it's 085 you might be stuffed but if its 02x type then you'll be ok with a 6 speed fitting to the engine already there. Whether it will fit the other bits is another matter. I imagine the driveshafts are different for a start.

I saw an A2 with a 1.8T in it last year so it's possible to shoe-horn big engines in there. Somehow.

seen it done in a 6n2, hydro pedalbox fitted the lot. its not an 085 box- wrong bellhousing

Yeah, the loop engine has to go with in too, but it can be done.
