I need a bit of advice please. First, The story:

I went to VW for a full service... After the service they do one of them vehicle checks.

I've had loads done to the car (Not all at VW as they charge a bomb!). But they stated a oil leak was found and stated it was the sump. I have all this in the report.

Quoted £102 to get it sorted all in... So I said yea do it...

That was a good two months back. I tend keep an eye on my oil level every other week. I noticed that the oil was very low within a few weeks so topped it up.

Did a MOT pre-test... Failed! :( in the advisory it stated leaking oil. Took it back to VW and they say nothing is wrong with it.

Week or so later I top it up AGAIN... . Had a proper MOT after sorting all the bits... passed (YAY!!! :) ) But again, in the advisory... oil leak. And the tester had to put 2L of oil in it!

I've got the car booked in with VW again this Thursday... and they're going to sort me out a loan car.

Now my concerne:

Long story short, if it's to do with the Sump then obviously they'll sort it all out for me. But I'm concerned now if it's not the sump and something else is leaking will they sting me?

The reason I ask is on there report it states sump leaking... Surely if it's another fault that's causing the leak I don't have to fork out for it? As they miss diagnosed it in the first place?

They should fix whatever is causing the leak free of charge?

I've not yet made a complaint... But I'm ready to do so if needs be. I can't keep buying oil every month and topping it up every 5 minutes. Complaint can be sent directly to head office. As the dealer already know I'm not to pleased with the service they've have me so far...

So I guess I'll wait till they get back to me later this week... I'm more than happy to kick up a fuss. In fact, I've done so already. But I don't want to spend any more money, this is the only thing wrong with the car now.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had to take my car back to them 3 times as they couldnt find a fault with my aircon

third time they then tell me the problem, cant remember the name of the part but this should have been spotted first time , if not second with the dye

£200 down , they pissed me off and i was offered the work done at cost price , about £280

Although online the part was about £170 ..

I think its all down to they can only test it so much , When the sump went on that leak may have stopped if they ran the car for a while and no oil came out they then might think its okay.

Although taking it for drives may throw up another leak over time , although seems like you loose alot of oil. If they have taken it in free to look and spot somthing else , I dont think they charge you for having a look second time round but if another part needs replacing then they charge for that cost for fidling around + part.

Hopfully someone else can shed some light on the situation

Surely loosing that much oil over a short time would leave a hell of an oil patch on your drive? Mine only loses a fraction of that and my drive and road outside the house are fucked

Tbh I doubt it was even your sump leaking sumps only really leak if they are split, and then they leak heavily for a short time before either the oil buzzer comes on or the engine dies from oil starvation. If anything it would of only been the sealant between the sump and the engine leaking, and if that was the case they well and truly had your pants down

Sounds like they mugged you off, make sure you rag the hire car :)

Use the Rev limiter to tell you when to change gear and the gearbox to slow you down for junctions :)

Did you not ask the mot tester if he could see where the leak was coming from?

Me been silly I never asked the MOT testers... But i did look under the car and seen two big drips of oil forming behind the sump.

I got my loan car... new polo. It's odd. like driving a 4x4 nice looking car, and the inside is sort of nice but not impress with it. But then again it's just a standard 1.2 one...

Anyway, The manager sent me an e-mail yesterday saying they've steam cleaner the engine but can't find the leak. So they've parked the car up over night to see if they can spot it today.

It is odd that I can't see oil on the road... but sometime I park on the grass verge.

I'm a bit confused now with VWs response... It seems like they're contradicting them selves.. As one minute they say it's fine. Then on a report it states oil leak. Now they're saying it's fine again?

I can only hope it's dripped down last night.

Well, after they've had the car for over a week and after a steam clean. VW are adamant that the car does NOT have an oil leak. But now they want to charge me the steam clean fee? Would have thought they would sort that out as a gesture of good will to diagnose the fault? And because they did mention that on the last vehicle check report. The downside is... as it's not a leak. It's something a little more serious... no oil in coolant so not gasket. But I guess it could be something to do with valves / piston rings or something?

Maybe time to get a GTi engine.

Gutted to hear that a VW dealer is doing stupid things like this, To find a leak they blatantly haven't gone about the right way, should do what we do at my work - Chalk spray the area the customer/tec has reported/suspect the leak, Take for a road test and continue to leave the car, Checking on it every day or so. A steam clean wouldn't have done anything apart from agitate the seal between the block and sump and make a mess in your bay.

Regarding a oil leak within the engine, Note the colour of your exhaust gas, If you have a stuck/damaged or worn piston ring causing the oil feed to go straight into the combustion cycle then you'll be burning oil so your exhaust gas would be blue and have a nasty smell. (would have failed its MOT if so) You could have a oil feed problem or a loose sump plug but that would be noticeable. Best bet, spend a Saturday looking over the car underneath on the floor or what ever, if there is a oil leak then you can pick it back up with VW leaving you with a dangerous car. Does the car have any flat spots on acceleration? Or a loose of power?

Payment wise a steam clean imo would be the same price as a service wash so £30 or something less. You shouldn't have to pay for it as they haven't fixed your problem so it is still a on going process. Kick off and you'll make them want your custom back so they would/should offer discounts to keep you.

Well, after picking it up today and kicking up a little bit of a fuss I had no charge at all. They still state no leak with the car.

I mentioned I'd be keeping very close eye on the "leak" I did question the fact if the sump even needed to be replaced in the first place... Meh, whatever got it back now. Will be able to slap my interior back in tomorrow.

In regards to the new Polo... I didn't like it at first. But towards the end of the week it started to grow on me... Best thing about it was the gearbox. Felt nice. :) but I seen a very nice new white polo GTi. might look into a test drive. :)

A, rip off for parts even if genuine

B, lots don't pay the workers for diagnosis time

C, paid per job on a set time, do it faster, earn bonus, how can they do jobs correctly when the set times are stupidly tight anyway
