Mk1 Golf Small block Turbo

Featured Replies

This forum has been great base for small block knowledge so in return I will share my new Mk1 Golf small block turbo build with you guys.

The turbo engine used to be in my Mk1 scirocco but I have taken this off the road to restore. It was more show than go and the engine was always wasted in it. I've bought a 83 Mk1 Golf for a daily that I will be building into "more go than show". i bet its pretty damn quick!

Fingers crossed its nippy.. it was abit of let down in the scirocco due to using the 4speed box and clutch haha

oh really? thats a shame, id love to turbo my mechanical lump in my mk2 but i dunno where to begin! haha. looks like youve gone down the carb route?

  • Author

Yes. I've used a 5 GT turbo carb to keep it looking original on my scirocco + I came from a 5 turbo back ground many years ago. If you was to do it I would use a HH engine as it has a more suited compression ratio over your HK. I knew very little when I started building the engine. this forum and the g40 forum taught me alot!

awesome! how does it run on the renault carb? you couldnt give me a basic list of what id need could you? also whats it like on fuel?

  • Author

It ran well even on my old knackered carb (I've since had it rebuilt) It was pretty bad on fuel but I never had it setup. The golf is pretty bad on fuel with the standard 1.3 so hoping it pulls similar MPG lol. The guys in the unit next door are 5 turbo gurus so they said they would set it up for me.

You need pretty much everything in my engine spec list.

calm down now eric, you will only make it go boom

dude I've been thinking about doing this for ages haha. how bad on fuel is bad? any idea what sorta miles you get for like a tenner of fuel?

whats the twin port vaccum canister? and why a polo gt fuel pump? mechanical one not strong enough? do you have any links to the saab distributor?

:D

I've got a spare twin port vaccum canister for sale... but its the vac feed thing on the dizzy looks like a flyingsauser. the twin port has a diaphram that goes both ways so it advances off boost and retards on boost.

A 5 GT turbo needs a 3bar fuel pump to run any decent boost. just giving it what the carb requires.

It cost me £50 to get to edition38 and £30 to get home pootling so £80 to do 320miles but we should wait for the setup figures tbh because that was with the carb just bolted on and driven.

I got the dizzy secondhand off Phatazz. I'm not sure what saab it came off.

Ah right il be interested in that then yeah!

Apparently the standard mecchy pump does actually run at 3 bar!

Ah right thats not very good! Lol isit runnng a bit rich then??

Damn it. I think its a 9000 one but theres a few of them

I do believe theres a thread on clubg40 eric with more info on said saab dizzy eric.

Awesome mate thanks mate aha

I'm doing alot of learning in this thread much thanks to the lads over at clubG40 - http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,6050.0.html .. if you get a spare minute read a thread on here that tommo posted called "supercharged" its full of useful infomation.

3bar from a mechcanical pump... really?? :o

It was running super rich. the guys on the 5 GT turbo forum have suggested I fit smaller jets. It really needs putting on a wideband to know whats going on with the fueling. which the guys next door are going to do.

The saab dizzy I got had a single port fitted. I fitted a Mk1 rabbit vac can that I had bought and fitted to my hydro head dizzy before I found out the g40 engine was a fail.

it looks awsome mate I'm assuming you got the 8j's (front wheels) all round as the rears would be massively wide at 9.5j. nice and lightweight though those wheels, I play around with a FRenault at uni but never thought they would fit a VW. I'll just slip the new michelin slicks we have on the polo when I'm next in.

Cheers Leon

Yes they are a 2x pairs of fronts. get some pictures up when you sneak some on your polo 8-)

I did sneak some against my ranger a couple of years back, to see what it would look like.

Haha dope

Do you know if they have any spares? I'm looking for some 5.5" barrels :)

unfortunately we only have three set and the are in use with two sets of slicks and a set of wets with no spare barrels the only wheel spares we have is for our Formula Super Vee on a beetle stud pattern. maybe you could try tentenths forum.

  • Author

Not to worry. I will keep on hunting. I'm yet to join tentenths but I got this set of wheels from a member on there. :)

I'll be following this, going to start building a turbo up soon so will use this as a bit of a check list!

Golf looks awesome on the first set of wheels!, and proper jealous of your unit!

looks nice on the clio wheels, love it on the splits mind! How much did something like that set you back? i guess they're not too bad coming from the racing circles? no scene tax?

Good to meet you the other day Winston :-)

  • Author

I will try and post up as much info as I can Max. I'm still ironing out niggles from when it was in the scirocco. I just hope the HH lasts :unibrow:

The splits have race car tax ;) They are getting rare in single seater circles now. I've had a few sets and paid anything from £100 a pair to £250 pair

Cheers guys. Good to meet you to Ben (did you tell me your build had gone, is it up anywhere else?)

PS.. Sorry for all the spam folks. updates soon ;)

I have started to clean the engine up ready for painting. I was going to just put it in but I'm not really flush enough to buy the service Items needed. I have a draw full of random paint so thought why not make it pretty and nice to work on as the engine thats coming out is dripping in oil and it really pisses me off doing anything under the bonnet.

Feel free to laugh at the colour.

Uprated clutch before fitting which will handle the boost much better than the standard 4 speed (fingers crossed)
