Cheers man! from starting as a joke its really starting to look good haha

My MOT is up on the 26th so thats when I will take it off the road and start all the work. I think I have all the bits I'm just waiting on a 3" to 2.25" exhaust adaptor coming in the post from ebay.

Building one at the moment too, but using a supercharger instead!, and probably moderate boost with

suck through.

Those pictures really don't do the colour justice, it's like polished copper!

What paint is that dude? I'm after a copper colour for a few bits :-)

Where does the twin vac pot come from?Do you need a Saab dizzy if you have the twin vac-pot? If you can make it fit the original polo dizzy, does it not work the same way? I was under the impression that the Saab dizzy was required because it had the turbo specific vacuum pot

Looks great though, and will look period with that head in the bay (loved it in the 'rocco). I'm assuming you've had no head work done? As i understand, the valves aer small in these heads, opening them up would surely release more power

Peak power maybe increased with bigger valves, but the usual problem of turbo lag, and a poor low RPM throttle responce may suffer even more so, the smaller the ports and valves (To a degree) the greater the air velocity at low engine speed which helps improve driveability, and off boost performance.

The valves are slightly smaller in these heads IIRC as you say, but comparing the inlet ports to a hyrdo head, there's nothing in it from what i can see!

Its plasticoat from the metallic range. See how long this lasts before you paint anything lol. The gloss lasts for years but this has a lower temperature rating, its still rated to 250 degrees tho should be reet.

Sadly I'm not smoothing my bay but I think I might remove the battery tray and few other bits to save weight and give it a lick of paint.

My twin port vac can came from a big block Mk1 Rabbit but alot of early uk watercooled VW's run them, I'm not sure what models or years tho. I had it bolted straight to a late Mk2 polo dizzy when using the G40 engine. I got the Saab dizzy from Arun at the last minute because the Mk2 polo dizzy doesn't fit the early head. you could convert the points dizzy to electric ignition to save hunting down a saab one.

No head work. I might even go hydrohead at some point as there is no need for it to look period in the racer.

Its nothing major i planned to paint, just bits and bobs. I had a funny feeling it was plastikote stuff, I'm always using it 8-) Good stuff, comes out half decent!

just weighed it in a walkden metals dude cant believe they thought it was a copper engine. you at unit tonight dude?

Eaton or G-lader, on a stock-ish CR, drawing through a weber DCD.

Was going to use a ABD (1.4 Hyrdo 8v) but now think i'll be using a HK

No idea what sort of power to expect either, as i'm trying to get the engine to a decent state of tune before adding the charger in at low boost. Problem is the choice of camshaft!

Why do you need to convert the dizzy to electrical though? Why can't you use a points dizzy (i've often wonderes this about bike carb conversions too :? ). The early polo dizzy fits fine, so if i could get a twin port thingy, I should be able to uae an early dizzy right? Any ideas what models those dizzys come from.

Max, your are correct regarding velocity in a smaller tubes, and the bores of hydro and mechy are practically the same (you'll want a GK inlet though as these have better port matching than the standard ones) but total valve area dictates peak power as a general rule of thumb. Again you talk of 'off boost' but with a super charger, this won't be an issue for you as much. Also, G40 turbo conversions seem to be ok off boost, and they have larger valves than mechys, so I dont think a 1-2mm enlargment will have a significantly negative effect, so long as you're not using a too big a turbo (K03 for a 1.3 seems to be the norm). Go EFI and let that deal with offboost performance for you. A decent set up should allow for anti-lag

G40s will only hit boost at around 3/4s throttle though, In day to day driving in traffic ect - the boost return valve will always be open, so you definity need the car to be driving well off boost. Lets not forget a G doesnt really hit max boost until 5.5k+ revs.

You could use the early dizzy with points if you wished and the twin port can would bolt up but they are gash!! :lol:

I've seen alot on later Mk1 sciroccos. later mk1 Golf GTi's. they were fitted to help emisions in the US.

Pranks, yeah you could just buy the Saab turbo dizzy! The one Winston got off me was for the non-turbo so Winston had to change the vac can for the turbo type.

If you bought the saab turbo dizzy it will already have a turbo vac can 8-) The only problem is that saab dizzys are difficult to time up because the mounting slots are in different places to the vw dizzy. So you sometimes have to decide between having the dizzy held in by one bolt and the timing correct, or having the timing out and the dizzy held in securely with two bolts :lol:

You can fit an accuspark or equivalent kit to the polo/golf dizzy and then fit a turbo vac can, thats what Winston was saying.

I forgot all about the fun I had timing it up. It was even harder with the huge vac can fouling everything. I had to run it upside down and with one bolt fitted. it did the job tho!

accuspark would have been my choice if I had time on my side.

I see, awesome stuff. So its as i though, points are just unpopular, rather than being unsuitable for the job.

Any idea for part numbers for the Golf vac can? I'm sure a dizzy fitted to the KR (from a golf) had the same drive as an early polo type, and i suspect many other engines too. Any of these have the pots? Just wanting to have as wider search base as possible

The KR dizzy doesn't have a vac can iirc. I've got the bosch box mine came in. I will get the number from it but I've got a twinport vac can for sale from a Mk1 Golf GTi to save you looking?

I've never heard of that rule of thumb dude, but you have to remember, just because the charger is creating boost, doesn't mean its being utilized and compressing the air entering the engine. That's why I'm building a high spec engine that would be decent ran at NA, with a slightly lower than standard CR (HK is 9.5:1, so will probably run at 8.5:1) and then as the charger is spun up, performance increases.

Also, like we were discussing at PS, its not running a sophisticated EFI or ignition system, so lag and off-boost performance is an ever daunting problem, especially if I'm hoping to use it as a daily!. Also, regarding the valves, I didn't mean it as such as you've taken it, i meant with the turbo, its better to keep the inlet side of things smaller, rather than larger, with a set-up like this.

Winston, you had a big problem with turbo-lag at first didn't you?

So basically, if i fitted a turbo vaccum pot to my accuspark fitted dizzy, all id then need would be a renault 5 carb and a charger? (And obvs all piping ect)

It was the dizzy part i was confused about before!

With you using a blow-through carb, you can use an intercooler too!, I'm still unsure wether you can or not with suck-through.

I'm not sure an intercooler would have an effect as its after the gasses are compressed that the temp increases. However, it may help to slightly reduce the the air temp before the charger, thus allowing more to be compressed :? This would however have a much reduced effect compared to cooling after compression as the air entering the intercooler would be of similar temperature as the air flowing over the intercooler. Unless you can put the intercooler after your suck through carb :lol:

I see your point with the charger, and low boost situations. I'm still not sure about the valve size thing. I'll have to consult 'The Book' :lol:
