Picked up my second vw today (had a 72 beetle before this car) and to say I'm pleased with its condition as we speak is an understatement.

Bit of history with the car:

Bought about 15 miles away from new in 1986, then sold to another local boy as the first owner passed away, he got a company car which is where I come in to the equation, I picked it up today on 86k miles taxed and tested. It has no advisories on the last mot and everything is near enough as it left the factory.

Anyway here are the plans:

Lowered probably 40mm maybe a bit more (tons of speed humps in this damn town- sets on just about every road)

Golf mk 2 steelies refurbed in silver or a graphite grey- flat mate has these on his golf, I will buy them when he bothers to refurb his BBS

Add a headunit and a modest sound system- maybe one ten inch sub and 4 speakers- have had ott in the past and its just stupid

Machine polishing

Fix the rear arches (not awful but rusty round the edges)

Paint rocker cover and a few other bits to clean up the engine bay

Change to a grill with driving lights

and a future engine transplant- this wont be until insurance companies stop fisting me though.

Quick mock up- wheel colour is wrong but I'm too lazy to load photoshop.

Yeah, cant believe the condition, even the jacking points are pretty sweet, the wheels look out of place in that condition!

Oh and the sun visors need sorting they keep flapping down.

Was lucky to find it by chance on friday-ad because originally I was after a late 80's/early 90's coupe!

I'll hopefully clean the bumpers up a bit tommorow!

Yeah, wanna keep it quite stock but with a few subtle mods, I'd love to be in Scotland!....saying that Corby is little Scotland so I'm close enough! And I really dont wanna scrape such a nice example, even though it handles like a boat right now :p

Right, not seeing much online to buy in the way of lowering springs/dampers or coilovers for saloons from this era (1986) anyone any advice where I'll find reasonably priced kits, or if there are other years of car ones that will fit?

great :) just saw someone on here with a loon build/make a coilover conversion and started panicking/being lazy thinking that was the only way to have coilies!

Ah cool, not saw your car about yet! I should be driving soon, just need to find cheapest insurance, best so far is £1400 tptf, 19 year old with 2 year clean licence...really dont get how they can justify that price on a 1.0 litre 4 speed saloon :l

If you see me driving just follow and I'll pull over, will be nice to see another one about!

Current engine detailing has begun, here is the state I got it in:

Today I bought some hi temp matt black paint, some scourer style pads, paint stripper and a wire wheel drill attachment (my terms are technical..I know!)

But I ended up painting the air filter cover and rocker cover- the rocker cover required alot of scrubbing with the drill attachment but I got it to this stage:

^Excuse my blurry phone picture, didnt wanna hold it too long though my hands were black!

Then I added a misty first coat and about 3 more coats. I cant post any more progress tonight as I never got the garage keys off my flat mate before he left for work..

But tommorow I will be doing the final coats and putting them back in place. Then I may do the manifold cover and clean the bay.

Quite happy with my motivation levels so far aha!

Oh and a laguna splitter may have to be added!

Finally some progress, I've been lazy lately/busy with work.

The wheels were very sorry for themselves so today I started sanding and painting them in matt black.

You can see in the top left a painted wheel (little preview) and flat mates BBS, which are on eBay as we speak. (even though I still think they should go on the mk 2 golf.

I'm planning on painting the centre cap plastic bit grey with the vw badge in black for a bit of contrast.

I've also started modding the door cards so that I can mount some vibe slick 6's in them. Removed the vinyl wrapping using a hairdryer to melt the glue and then started fibreglassing:

I appreciate some people think I'm butchering quite a standard car, but this is only very rough work so far, it's going to be a lot neater. Anyway I cant be driving without music for much longer its killing me! Rear doorcards will be left alone, I plan on putting 6x9's in the parcel shelf (boxed underneath to stop the sub vibrating the cones) and an active 10 inch sub in the boot. I know its not going to be show quality audio but as long as I've got an alright set up thats done neatly with wires routed neatly I'll be happy.

60/40 lowering kit with shocks is also on the cards very soon!

Yup thanks for the heads up, I noticed it was when I was in the boot getting the lights out a while back, it has two holes pre cut out but covered by the original shelf, not checked what diameter they are though aha

Yes, should be getting a lot done in the next month or two!

three out of four wheels done (Till I find my p slots!). Got to do 3 more grey centre caps though, excited to lowering her now!

Bumpers have also been blackened using a heat gun and autoglym bumper gel! Worked amazingly considering they were 50 shades of grey!

Sound system is also nearly done, just gotta get front speakers in and sub.

Ended up wiring in the head unit from scratch!
