Bascially, got pulled over last night, driving normally etc.

They say they've pulled me due to my wheels being too wide on the rear. I explain that I thought the law was that the tread must be within the arch and the rest of the wheel/tyre can be protruding up to 30mm from the arch. When measuring mine it's 21/22mm. The Policeman said he isn't a wheel expert but will call one to come now (basically letting on that he didn't even know that law). The second policeman arrives and looks at them from above for about 5 seconds and declares them as illegal and unsafe, doesn't measure them or anything. Then quite loudly and rudely questions me on why i've put these wheels on, do I have insurance. Why have I modified my car etc.

A lot of people on here have way more poke than this so just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. I was very polite and co-operated the whole time and they still treated me like a murder suspect, and when I told them what I thought the law was on the matter they didn't give me an answer.

Heres a couple pictures. It's an 8j wheel with 165/55/13 tyre and an offset of 12 I think.

not had personal experience myself but going by what it says in section 18 i don't see the problem? they look safe and doesn't exceed the limit. print off the information and carry it round with you (and a ruler)!

Yeh I have printed it off now :) It seemed silly, sitting there by the side of the road with three police officers while they try to convince me my wheels are illegal, more out of their personal opinion than the law they are meant to be enforcing.

a photo looking straight down one side would be more useful. would give more of a chance of estimating how much its sticking out then.

The police have wheel experts? hahaha, christ they find new job descriptions for creative law making everyday.

If they pull you for it again ask them to get one of there riot vans up there so they can measure the amount of poke on them wheels.

I've taken them off now so can't really get a photo from the side properly. But the 2 officers that pulled me agreed that the tread was fully covered by the arch. I was pretty certain that the law on it was as you say it also. Obviously didn't want to come across as a smart ass or arrogant so kept my mouth shut after saying it once. At the end of the day they do and can give car enthusiasts a hard time when a car is pushing the boundaries slightly. :(
