hey guys, jumped in my car this morning to take the missus to work.

started perfectly bla bla, got 5 mins down the road, and then all of a sudden the rev needle starts going crazy and the car is misfiring so much i cant even pull away!

thought it ws my limiter fucking up ( i have an aftermarket one) so i disconnected that and it still did it.

gave it a few revs and it cleared up and then drove perfectly!!

went out in it again, and the same thing happened!

the rev needle going crazy makes me think it may be the coilpack on its way out? as thats where it gets its feed.

any ideas guys?

That can be a sign of the hall sender breaking down but not sure if your car has one of these? Is it not an early one? Never had a coil pack fail so not sure if this causes the rev counter to go tits up but it seems logical that it would. Also worth checking for loose or damaged wires, my old mk2f would randomly cut out and/or suffer from random fits of missing, changed everything I could think of but couldn't get to the bottom of it for ages, turned out to be the casing on a wire had split and was intermittently touching the body

nope no hall sender as its an early engine

the reason i think its the coil is that the rev counter gets its feed from there dont it?

well. drove car home, did some stuff to it, then changed the coilpack to a spare working one,

wont fire at all now. wont run!

changed back to the old coil and nothing. i even cleaned up the earths ect.

took the king lead off and no spark! wtf!

I've double checked everything! I'm literally stumped.

Even changed relays under the dash for working ones. I'm pretty pissed off now tbh.

running an accuspark kit, no points! plus the kinglead is before the points anywayzz

and what makes the coil send a little spark down the king lead?

gay. i thought it was a constant supply..

the dizzy energises the coil by sending a signal, whether its points, accuspark or a hall sender type.

am sure iv read somewhere about accusparks fucking up, must be a way of testing it.

dont suppose youve an oscilliscope?

usually carry one around in the boot for such an occasion

swap the dizzy back over to run points and a condensor, should work then. If not just find the right saab dizzy

I've ditched the 9v resistor wire for a 12v wire though. wont i fry the points?

I thought the resistor protected the coil, except when starting.

nah its because of the points iirc. there designed to use only 12v, when starting it uses 12v and then drops down to 9v

right!! I've found out, my accuspark kit is dead :/ LAME. its only a few months old!

I've put points back in, but obviously I've ditched the 12v wire! what can i use to drop the voltage of the wire in now using down to 9v? a resistor of some sort?

it runs, just not very well.

Hmm confused. Set the points to 0.4mm as it says in my autodata manual, and it wont rev up.. bogs down if u put you are foot down. Will idle with the choke on though.

Have you reset the base timing (assume you have dizzy off)

See if you can get the accuspark kit exchanged, providing it was fitted correctly (which it clearly was if it was running) then they should replace it?

I never had any trouble whatsoever with mine!
