Power Steering Rack-dead

Featured Replies

First off, the seal has gone on the left hand side of my steering rack, all the fluid has pissed out and I've driven about with THE heaviest streeing, so I've taken it to the garage and they say now the seals gone I need a whole new rack... costing me a hefty £380... anyway, could I just fix the leak (new seal) or could I have damaged it by driving about?

Another irritating problem is that my coilovers are squeeking like a bitch, now, i've had it back, everythings tight, everything that needs greased is greased and its still squeeking!! and getting worse.... I was thinking top mounts but it really sounds like the springs to me... could my brand new TA's be fooked or be faulty? I'll get onto PhilJ if i find out they are

Cheers

Marc

There are various companies about that will be able to refurb it for you. Got mine done local for £95 cash.

They trying to.charge you that just in parts or is that fitted? I think. New one is about £150ish via euro carparts. It's not a massivly difficult job to swap it yourself if you're a reasonable spanner monkey

£380 fitted (he told me it was £300 for parts, then he said go on the internet and look)

but i cant find any on ECP...

Are 9n ones exactly the same? cos theres loads on eBay from 9n polos and ibizas

I would imagine they are identical yes, personally wouldn't buy a used one as they are a common failure. £80 to fit isn't a bad price. Tbh the garage is probably charging £300 as that is the pre exchange price they then dispose of you broken rack for you (so nice of them) and get £150 deposit back feom the motor factors

have you ran it without fluid?

Perfect opportunity to have a manual rack fitted.

pump not broken yet? lol

Oh please no! Can't afford the pump going! Just got payed and its going straight out the window! Stupid cars!!

stupid car? stupid guy for driving it with no fluid

I'll get on my bike

Looking another 1-200 more + fitting if you killed the pump too.

depends though, if the pump seized surely it will have nackered the aux belt? but if its still turning the residual oil may have kept it alive? I'm unsure, may not be seized but could have gotten damaged i guess?

excuse to scrap and buy mk2.

Oh for fucks sake.... I can't even get to the reservoir to see if there is any oil

Would appear you have none ot very little fluid, stop driving.

They give off the slighest squeal if you run them without oil for a short time.

A long time, and it squeals constantly.

Sure it's your coilies that are squeaking?

It only started squeaking when i changed the suspension and when i go over bumps... theres still fluid dripping out from underneath so theres still some in, but I'm going to leave the car where it is and not drive it.

Anyone wanna buy a 9n3?

Hardly a big job, if you can do without it a few days see if the place by me will work by post, would be abke to fix it the day thru receive it?

Thanks for the replies, going to get a re-conned rack and have it in the garage this week.. don't need it all week so its the perfect time for something to go wrong.... so to speak...

The car is in the garage... they said that the squeak is because of stress because I lowered it...? And said it never should have been lowered.....Someone explain that to me please??

And the steering rack failing is also because I've lowered it... even though I know the seal was leaking before I lowered it....

But seriously.. if no one else's squeaks after lowering? How can it be stress on parts? I'll get a video up as soon as I can to help you understand the squeak I'm going on about...

Thanks

Are the 9n's not famous for a squeak because of the console bushes?

I might be talking shite, but i'm kinda sure that's the case man. Worse when it's wet.

Console bushes fail a lot and can squeak, my rear sometimes makes a kinda creaky noise since lowered. Lowering can put more stress on the rack and cause failure

tell the garage to STFU ahaha

Go and collect your car and go to a good garage
