Help With Alloys On A 9n3

Featured Replies

So i've got a 2008 1.4 Bluemotion 9N3, I've slightly modded it. (Put in a GTI Honeycomb grille and had the mirrors and roof painted black to contrast with the rest of the car being white.)

But i'm now looking to get new alloys, purely because the tread on the tyres is totally shot, and I thought since I need new tyres, I might as well get new alloys now.

So the thing I need help with is this, my current tyres/alloys are 14". If I buy, for example, 17" alloys, will they just fit on with a different sized tyre, or do I need to get 14" alloys? Wheels are where my expertise in cars end completely.

My local garage is run by just one guy, an old local. And other than the fact he knows how to put new alloys and tyres on, he is pretty clueless, and beginning to lose it.

Any help would be appreciated guys :-D Could do with it quickly because I would like to have them ordered and put on this week.

I know someone will be able to help me out so cheers in advance!

Where's your old bluemotion grille?! Pm me if you have still got it!! I want it :-)

But I have 16" with 195/45/16 Tyres... could easily get 17" with low profiles... as long as its not too low

You can easily put 17s on it if it is low!

I do still have the old grille yeah, its white obviously though. Not sure what I want to do with it because a lot of people seem to want one!

That is a major issue with my car I think it is incredibly low. Not been lowered by me but I bought it that way from a dealership. Not sure exactly how far off the ground but it gets caught on any and all pavements to say the least.

What's your price then?

And yeah, my mistake... you can go low.. and its the sills on the bluemotion that makes it look low...

So to sum up? If I buy 17" alloys. They WILL without doubt fit my car as long as the tyres I buy are obviously 17" as well?

As for the grille mate i'm not sure. PM me a price and I'll have a think. I've only just put the new grille on and i'm currently awaiting me better halfs approval before I chuck the old one! I'm sure if I offer to spend the money on her she will allow the change.

Yes. have to be the correct stud pattern and offset. Edition38 has a good for sale section.

Thanks mate. As I said, when it comes to wheels i'm as educated as a toddler on higher algebra. So the stud pattern I get, it's a 5 stud alloy. Offset requirements though I could use some help with? Just a general explanation if you could?

Also these are the alloys i've been looking at. Would something like this fit in your guys opinion? http://www.alloywheels.com/product.asp?V_I...eHistory=basket

And no I'm not looking for an opinion of how good they will look thanks ;)

It's not just stud pattern though.

VW stud pattern used to be 4x100 (the 100 being the distance between the holes). But Mini was 4x101. Still 4 holes, but different spacing.

Offset is how far the wheel sits in, or out from the hub. VW offsets are around 36ish.

So if you have like -7, it means it'll poke alot. Just try and keep it within 36.

As long as you buy tyres that suit the width of the wheel and the diameter, it'll fit. So, buy a 17" wheel, and you'll need xxx/xx/17 sized tyre.

The xxx/xx is the width of the tyre and then percentage of width to height.

Just to add another note

Because your car is the bluemotion, is it designed for MPG, so it is more aerodynamic than a normal car, and it also has low rolling resistance tyres (creates less friction, therefore, more MPGzzzzz )

Point being; if you put bigger size wheels, with normal tyres (for that size rim) , don't expect your MPG to stay the same

I'm not talking down to you or anything like that, it's just another consideration to take into account

Happy hunting for your new wheels 8-)

If 17s are the size you whant then I would stick to 7x17 with a 205 40 17 tyre if I would also look at 16s because of it been a bluemotion U will save a few mpg because of less power needed to move the wheels anyway 16s don't look to small as that's the size the 9n3 gti uses

As said above really, best bet for second hand alloys are Audi a3 or a4 or other vw wheels as they will fit straight onto your polo and make it look fresh. Width wise you wouldnt want much bigger than 7iches as of the scrubbing matter

So:

Rim size ie 17"

Rim width ie 7j - j being a unit for inches

Offset how much poke or tuck the wheel will have (space from hub to centre of wheel) high offsets normally mean a nice overall look. To low of a offset you can struggle to get your wheels to sit right (legall reason.)

Centre bore - think new polo's are 57.1 I believe (check on that) this is the seat of the wheel to hub on the little lip

Personally 16" by 7j will be a lot Better with your fuel, look a lot better and over all there is a good choose.

Hope you get some nice rims man :)

You can go any size you want mate, 15/16/17s, even 18s but they're HUGE for a 9n3.

if you want 17's i wouldnt go much bigger than 7 or 7.5 wide, itll scrub like a sod if you do, well if youre low anyway, with 16's you can probably go 8 inch wide comfortably, after that you'll probably need arch work if your low again..

I'd be curious as to whether your bluemotion is actually lowered tho as someone earlier mentioned, the kit on them makes them look as tho they are, when infact they aint!

personally for tyres id go, 205/40/17 or 195/35 for mega stretch if the wheels are wider, all comes down to how low you are and what offets the wheels are!

Cheers for all the help guys.

I've decided to go for 6.5x16" matte black alloys, with 195/40R16 tyres.

Hopefully get them delivered soon and then It's as easy as slipping them on! The MPG on the bluemotion is so good that losing a wee bit doesn't bother me to badly. I mean 78MPG on average! Not bad at all!
