The Grey G40 Everybody Knows

Featured Replies

Well I got this off Matt the other day and seems quite a popular car on here. Didn't know whether to do a lil build thread or not but opted in for one.

So first impressions of it is ok, however a good bit of room for improvement.

Bodywork wise:

A lot of small dinks from over the years that need to be looked at. Started checking for any rust etc. All arch trims have now come off and found some nice spots of rot and rust. Going to need two new front wings. and maybe a bonnet unless i can get the small dent out.

And if anyone knows the paint code for this also please pm me :) the stickers in the boot but worn out.

Engine:

This is my first g and one of the main reasons why I was tempted by a polo again. There seems to be a lot of oil around the bay, what do people do with the breather pipes?

Going to prob get the charger serviced, take most of it apart and give it a good clean and scrub.

Exhaust:

In the first say 10 min of my drive of a lovely polo the exhaust falls off. Don't like the overall look and way it sits on it anyway so its going in for a custom one at the end of the month. Straight through to back box. I'm also going to get them to fab some stronger holders and get it tucked right up out the way.

interior:

Hate the height that polo seats sit at. going to change for some rado or mk2 rocco seats in the near future and then will be looking at what else to do. Poss flocking all depends which route I take on interior., that will be one of the last things though if happened.

The sketchy handling is all part of the fun I think, it seems pretty tidy apart from the usual skank under the arches but that's the same with all polos. You should put the breather into a catch tank if it's spitting a load of oil everywhere, hopefully that should sort it out unless youve got a leak. Apart from that it's a nice car mate

It likes to wonder everywhere, although polos handle crap unless sub framed etc, this one feel worse than any prev polo iv had. So going to go through all the bushes and be on the look out for a subframe very shortly.

Hasn't this one done quite a lot of miles? You'll be surprised how different it feels with fresh bushes all round. I changed everything, including the steering arms and rack, on mine and it's really sharpened it up.

Good suspension, G-Laderseite bushes and a slippy diff (eventually) will all help.

And if anyone knows the paint code for this also please pm me :) the stickers in the boot but worn out.

If you're planning to ditch the boost return pipes, you'll need a catch can. Or do what I do and vent into the chassis leg (only ever meant to be temporary but it's been that way for years now)

A lot of oil around the rocker cover could mean it's running a non-G40 gasket. That's worth a check.

Oil around the boost return points to a weepy charger oil seal.

Charger service is worth doing to be on the safe side, do you have any idea when it was last done?

Good car this, rusty bits all look normal too.
