I'm not too sure what you mean pulled to one side...

I've no experience with the retractable ones but I'm using standard 4 point harnesses. So when you are on track you can use the harness but on the road the normal 3 point belt

Yeah I know... but you seem to be going 3 point so you have the retractable feature to make them usable on the road but if you can run both then you can have the standard 3 point belt which is perfect for the road and a 4/3 point with out the retractable feature for when you track it.

But the rear buckle point on mk2/3's is almost centre on the front seat anyway isn't it so it wouldn't be too much off to one side if you chose to go 3 point. But as had been said the retractable feature might not work at the angle.

this is the diagram i was referring to, it shows the windows which are acceptable to mount a harness point to.

i have my shoulder straps mounted to the rear lap strap mount and the bottom of the inertia real on the rear wheel arch. it's passed scruiteneering like that for about the past....5yrs!

Is the rear lap belt central to the seat?

Ie could I mount a 3 point on that single rear fixing need it be inline with the centre of the seat?

no it's slightly into the centre of the car.

Indeed, and the ones I used (OMP) the reels wouldnt work unless it was coming out at 180degrees and dead central, which isn't easy when trying to mount them to a flat surface

These are the same OMP reeled harnesses i have in my polo...they just didnt work as well so i just locked them in place and used them as fixed 3 point harnesses.

If I get fixed ill be getting 4 points anyway.

Mounting them at the right angle isnt a problem since they come on brackets that can be bent to the correct angle...the reason i couldnt do this is because my harnesses go under my rear floor so the belts just wont work the way they should.

I'm getting rid of them either way since the car is being broken soon. :-)

Ah so the retractors may work if fitted properly?

Come to think of it I could probably make a bracket central to the front seat with a spreader plate or something?

Yeah we use those regularly actually, was thinking for mounting the inertia reel as appose to a belt mounting point :)
