The 2nd Polo Breadvan

Featured Replies

welcome everyone!

some of you may have seen that i bought a polo breadvan, rare green with pin striping on it off slacker. then it got destroyed! see link below

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...=273842&hl=

good news! around 5 months ago now i bought another one :) this one was a fox not a genesis, same engine lower miles, white not green, and it needed some work doing to it! which i didnt mind as i had many many many spare parts sat on my drive from the old one.

my plan with the green one was to drop a gt in it on a weber carb! the gt had been sat for over a year in my shed i just had to get the thing out, see what condition it was in n get it into the new breadvan. before all of this i had to repair and swap many things over from one polo to another.

firstly, here are pictures of how i bought it.

There was a huge hole in the back box, the front shocks were fucked! the interior i didnt like but other than that it was decent! i was happy to spend the £500.

So when i got it home, the work began!

swapped the suspension, seats and doorcards, front bumper, rear exhaust which is a bike can, tail lights, mirrors, thats about it

then a month or two later, round at my m8s, i gave her a clean n this is how she looks now,

So another month later it was time to drop in the gt!

I had a gt engine, without a cam or rocker cover. so i bought an MH head with a cam in it, so i decided to drop the gt block in, with a MH head, weber dmtl 32/34 carb, 1.0 4 speed box. I had read many things about converting an injection system to carb, having to need a coil, ignition module, etc. Now me and my m8 just couldnt see why the single point injection would not work with the weber carb on it, so we decided to have a go at getting it to run!

Everything was set, new gaskets, fuel pump, oil filter, engine, carb, off we went.

DSC02470.jpg

off with the single point injection

DSC02471.jpg

off with the inlet and the exhaust manifold is loose

DSC02472.jpg

DSC02473.jpg

out with the 1.0 spi

DSC02475.jpg

on the right the old, on the left, the gt bottom end

DSC02479.jpg

gave the engine bay a quick spruce

DSC02480.jpg

with help from Adam, Greg and Jamie, the gt went in rather easily - even though we didnt have an engine hoist!

DSC02481.jpg

MH head on there

DSC02483.jpg

me cautiously torquing the head up

DSC02485.jpg

cam in

weber carb, adaptor plate, inlet manifold

Then came A BIT OF A PROBLEM! i had lost the fuel pump pin/cam follower! :( i spent all day phoning and searching for one and what i found out was that every company had them on back order from germany! so we had a think, then thanks to jake, we discovered a solution, but was unsure about it!

a valve!

DSC02491.jpg

it was a perfect fit, although it was a bit long

DSC02492.jpg

DSC02493.jpg

DSC02494.jpg

and i am now happy to say that it worked and has been working fine for the last 800 mile!

engine completed!

DSC02496.jpg

after a little fuck up with the ignition leads, she fired up! we couldnt believe it! the ignition system was working fine, the fuel was working fine, she was running as sweet as a nut! engine temp was fine so what we had was:

a gt bottom end, with an MH head - mechanical fuel pump, weber dmtl carb, with spi ignition and a 4 speed box!

Has anyone done this before? the power is much better than the 1.0 that was in there and with a gas analyser and examination of the spark plugs the fuel economy isnt that bad when i drive normally!

next thing was to decat her.

DSC02523.jpg

thats it for now! if anyone has any questions just let me know!

thanks for looking!

cameron1589 YER A COMPLETE STAR M8! Also runforrestrun you are too coz if u had not pointed me to this post then Ide still be giving my polo dirty looks for just sitting there looking sad unable to be fueled. That idea with the valve. So simple yet so ingenious! Well done m8 coz a didnt think of it. As soon as I seen this post it gave me the enthusiasm to do the exact same thing n make my own push rod. So I did. DELIGHTED. Straight after a 12 hour nightshift I was straight under the bonnet slapping my home made cut push rod in. Bit lucky perfect fit first time. Not too long n not too short! After bit of fiddling with the timing once I got it started its running and ticking over really really smooth and so quiet. Like a new car when i rev it now. That quiet healthy smooth sound. Tommorow I will get suspension arms done n few other bits and then its heading for an MOT. CANT WAIT TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF IT AGAIN! Think I deserve an extra long drive with plenty of long straights once its MOTd to celebrate. Might even treat it to a new stereo to blast my ipod rock n rock outa it. Got some nice small 50wtt pioneer speakers aswell that will be ample enough for me to throw into the back where the originals usually fit. If all is well next month I'm looking into a full respray metallic black with crystal tail lights and some small mods. Possibly lots of chrome trim round the edges inside and out . No lowering and no silly stuff. Want to keep it as standard as possible. Erm apart from that weber 32/34 ( is it ) u can get for them. That would be icing on the cake. In the long run ide love to do a bigger inlet and exhaust bits. Probably getting ahead of mysel but persivierence wins again. THANX AGAIN GUYS ! Well done for sharing the knowledge but the photos speak a million words. Exellent !

Nice work, the DMTL is pretty good to be honest!

Should be pushing 70hp too, get a decent cam in there for a bit more top end.

TheMitch1 - i am delighted to help you, i feel abit bad aswel, because i actuly did the engine over a month ago, I've jus been busy and lazy to post the build thread up, so you could have had this delightful knowledge weeks ago! glad to hear its running as sweet as a nut!

MaxGT - i hope to be pushing 70hp! it does feel quick but i dont know if thats just down to the 4 speed box? next things are, 4,2,1 stainless manifold, a better cam, if poss gk inlet manifold/ported inlet manifold, uprated plugs and ignition leads and maybe a dyno'd and properly tuned carb.

  • 1 month later...

sad to see my old one dead but glad some of its still on the road.

That smoothed number plate recess looked shite from my sofa the other nite

mate i hate the smoothed tailgate! I've been looking for some kind of standard breadvan tailgate for the last 3 months! does my head in everytime i look at the rear.
