How much of the light do I have to cut away? Where appears to be a section inside the light itself which is stopping the new bulb going all the way in

Sounds like you've got the wrong bulbs to me.

They should be H7, unless it's the GTi which is D2S.

Got any pics of the problem?

I wouldn't be cutting anything to make it fit, if it's the right stuff then it will fit. If its not it won't.

As already said show us what your working with so we know.
