Hey guys, I have a 6n2 GTi that came with a momo steering (non-airbag) wheel fitted when i bought it. They airbag light has been on since i got it and i want rid!

Reading around the forums i have discovered you can trick the airbag ecu into thinking that the airbag is connected by using a resistor and plugging it into the airbag wiring connector.

Now I have the resistor, I've come unstuck as to wear to connect it. As it was not me that disconnected the airbag steering wheel i have no idea where any wires were disconnected from.

Has anyone else done this?

What i would REALLY appreciate is if someone would be kind enough to show me what the connector looks like, and where i need to put the resistor.

Apologies if this has been asked before, searching the forums has proved fruitless for me!

There should be an airbag cable behind the wheel housing (plastic behind the wheel).

The resistor will connect into that wiring (should be connectors or a block).

Sorry, has been a while since I looked at mine, but initially the light was on, got vagcom on it and it has never come back on :)

Yep behind the wheel is a slip ring, you might have to remove this to fit a new wheel, so behind that there is another connector (2pins) that's where the connevtor goes.

Also if this is an early 6n, then you can just unplug the light on the dash, as you will no longer

Have an airbag so the system is pointless.

Dont they now check for the presence of an Airbag in car fitted with them as standard items for the MOT? or have i mis-read something.

IE no sports steering wheels and light must operate and extingish at system check when the ignition is first turned on.

Thanks guys, it is a 2001 6n2 Gti so i cant disconnect the light - plus i still want the other airbags to work so thats not an option.

I removed the plastic housing behind the steering wheel yesterday before posting this thread to see if there was anywhere obvious that the resistor would go - all i could find was 2 wires that seemed to have been cut and possibly had the connector disconnected, could that be it?

A pic of the connector would be awesome!

Yellow IIRC

Is the cable you're referring to flat and has like a plastic mesh on it?

Any airbag or SRS related wiring would be yellow. Iirc it's the only yellow cable back there

As far as mot, then if there are airbags fitted to the car ie 6n2,9n etc where there are passengers side airbags, side airbags and pretensioners etc fitted then you can use a sports steering wheel, but you would need to bypass the airbag (as its no longer futted) so that the system will still work ie other airbags and pretensioners and the light will go out after its startup check cycle.

On earlier cars ie 6n, which would have a drivers side steering wheel airbag, and on later ones a passengers side airbag. On cars with drivers only, you can simply remove the whole system as it only has the one airbag and no other parts so no need for a light. If you have a later car with drivers + passengers side airbag then you can either use a resistor or remove the silly passengers side airbag and fit a nice glovebox in its place. Again as there are no other components you could then remove the light.

General rule is if it has SRS or AIRBAG stamped into the dash or steering wheel or on a tag on the sears etc then you will then have to check the system operates correctly, so I the case of the 6n2 and newer, you will need to keep the system working.

Having removed the steering column cover again, there is no yellow connector. All I can find is 1 yellow and 1 white wire covered in a foam sleeve.

I can only assume that the previous owner has done away with the connector and just left these wires 'floating around'.

Does this sound about right?

It sounds like he/she may have chopped the connector off and removed the whole slip ring assembly, if the wires where in a sleeve then it's likely that they are the wires, how ever they may be for something else.

Is the yellow wire a single wire or are they're more then one wire inside? As this may be the sleeving,

Also once you connect it, the light will not go out until you plug in VAGCOM and delete the fault code.

The yellow wire is just a single wire.

I have vagcom so can clear the fault code. When reading the fault codes it says something like "Drivers airbag resistance too low"

I will try the resistor on these wires when i get a spare half hour and update as necessary.

Ok, nobody likes a question without a solution so heres me doing my bit.

It turns out the yellow wire and the white wire had indeed been cut from the adaptor and left hanging - these ARE for the steering wheel airbag.

The resistor i initially tried was a 1.8 ohm resistor with a 2 amp fuse connected. This did not work and i continued to get the 'resistance too low' error message when hooked up to vagcom.

I then got a 3.3 ohm resistor with a 2 amp fuse connected, hooked it up to the loose wires and got the vagcom out again. I cleared the fault code and hey presto I now have an airbag light that comes on with the ignition then goes out again as it should do.

For the record, if you are buying your resistor from this guy, connect the wire with the resistor to the yellow wire behind the steering columb. Not sure if it makes any difference the other way round but this worked for me.
