Hi All,

Not really sure to start with this but i've been lurking on here for a while and wanted a project car so I kept my eye out for something different when my 90 Saloon came up on ebay.

I picked it up for £410 back in may!

Here's some photo's from back then.

After a 150mile drive from wrexham where i bought the car i then set about looking at the problems with the car,

Firstly the car is strongly pulling to one side so on closer inspection it has a bent bottom arm so first thing is to replace these.

Also the wing is dented in and this is stopping the door from opening.

The exhaust is just hanging on with wire.

Theres a massive dent in the rear quater and variour rust holes in the car such as drivers door sill, filler cap panel.

Ok so the next thing for me to do was start cracking on with some work so firstly i removed the front bumper and then set about removing the susspension leg ready to change the bottom arms.

here's the bent bottom arm!

I also had to remove the front wing dew to it being dented and unable to open the passengers door fully!

Next is for me to tackle the rear quarter body work!

So the next thing for me to do was attack the dent on the rear quarter.

The person before me had sent at poping the dent back out by hammering the shite out of it and had streached the metal big time on the quarter and it was bulging out of line!

So using a sanding block i rubed the area to high light the high spots and the tapped these inwards using a panel hammer.

Whilst working on this area i decided to check under the rear arch trim for rust as under the rear quarter there was alot of rust where the skin joins the car.

As i took off the trim my worst fears came to greet me loads of holes, rust and very thin material.

So next thing was to set about cutting all of this out using and angle grinder.

So my next task was to weld a new arch on that rotten 1/4 that i cut out!

So because you cant get replacement pannels for the saloon or i could'nt find any I had to think on my feet and the front dented wing i took of the front of the car came in to my head as an option because it was the same diameter for the wheel and in good condition.

So i set about cutting the arch off the front wing and then welded to to the rear quarter using tack welds a few inches apart and then filling in the gaps to spread the heat around not to warp the pannels.

So next thing for me to do is alot of filler work on the back quarter!!

I've got a new front wing and sprayed that up using my nice new spray gun set up

Very happy with the spraying results will loads some photo's of that up soon!

Also coming up is new rear lights, GT Cam and fuel pump! maybe some bike carbs too!

Also purchased these porsche cookie cutter wheels not sure if they will scrub or now yet as the car is on standard springs but they have been cut so I'm going to put in back on original suspension for a bit.

Anyone think these will look good?

Initially I thought yours looked a lot better than mine did and for only £160 more but i see you have had just as much work to rescue it.

Nice work though.

I'm not sure about the wheels- I think they look great but I'm not convinced about the colour combo with the car - will be good to see them on - cant you rest one up against each wheel on one side and stand back a need take a photo?

I striped the old cam out today but i need to swap the pulley from my origonal cam to the gt cam so I've been making a piece of tooling to hold the pulley so i can undo it today will post pics soon!

On a good note all the tappets look excellent no wear on them at all!

GT Cam here we come! :)

OK so today i set about starting to fit my Polo GT Cam into my 1.3 engine on the loon.

Firstly I removed the air intake pipe and the cam belt cover.

I then Aligned up the dot on the cam pulley with the arrow on the cover!

I then removed the 3 bolts on the rocker cover and removed the cover.

Then i marked a line down the distributers so i can aling it easy when i put it back togeather!

I undone the two bolts in the distributer and removed it!

I then marked the 5 shells holding the cam shaft in 1-5. And removed the nuts on these 1/2 a turn at a time!

I removed all 5 shell covers then i had to cut cam cover to enable me to get the cam out!

When i got it out i compared the pulleys on the origonal cam and the gt one and the teeth were completely different so now my next task is to remove the origonal pulley and fit it to the gt cam!

I have been fabrication so heavy steel to make tooling to hold the pulley whilst i try to undo the bolt WIsh me luck!

I know alot of people go to kenfig isit? on a sunday but heard its all done up corsa and stuff with bad boy exhaust not into the my self!

I'm taking a flyer on mine that the engine is good for a few months with only new sparks and filters etc before I'm swapping it over for a 1.4. (famous last words i guess as 107k)

Totally - So many of these got to that point where the MoT ran out and the owner got the calculator out. But they deserve better, and it's totally worth it when you've saved it and made it yours.

Great to see another MK2 loon getting some love and sticking around.

Small update! The engine is up and running again with the GT Cam fitted and a new cam cover gasket along with the Gt fuel pump and a new battery! Just need to wire up the pump correctly now!

Haha yeah deffo! there's a few decent meets now and again mainly with So Wal (www.so-wal.fourmflash.com)

Also Kenfig got stopped ages ago due to the chavvy's it was always a laugh though to see the cars and some tidy cars used to turn up too haha

good work man! i got a saloon just after christmas for £400 with much less work needed. I've been debating about a little bit of rust round the towing eye and a few pickled stone chips and i would have definitely not had the balls to crack on with this one. keep up the good work!
