Mods that don't hike up the insurance?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone

Been wanting to get started on my 9N Polo, cleaning it up then starting to do bits and bobs on it.

However, I've not had the car (or my license) for a year so insurance is quite a bit.

Just a general question, what parts/mods can I fit/do to my Polo which wont make my insurance go up? Or if only a little cost?

What I was thinking of doing was a bit of detailing (which doesn't need to be declared obviously), then lowering springs instead of coilovers (I'd imagine this wouldn't put my insurance up as much?) then a set of smart alloys?

I know it can't be an exact science but if anyone can think of any other nice touches I can do which won't be breaking the budget let me know.

Cheers

body mods should cost you less in insurance hikes than any engine/suspension mods will. best to ring up your insurer and ask about possible increases with the plans you have.

It dnt matter if you do coils or springs the insurance gose off how much it is lowerd and it normaly 30 - 50mm then 50-120 mm. Also most the time having it up to 50mm will only cost around £50-£80 a year.

I don't no I I'm right or not but I'm shure if you put oem alloys on a car you don't have to declair them ie vw Audi seat ? You don't have to spent daft money on wheels to get a nice look plus with springs and coilovers my Insurence just says suspension modification so I don't think there will be any different ?

Yer I told my insurance I put vw alloys on n they said they didn't needto know about them.

Right nice one, think I might do springs on this Polo as they're cheaper and if I'm honest when I'm 21 next year I wouldn't mind getting a bigger car, if that's a 5DR Polo or Golf.

That's really good to know about coilovers and the OEM alloys, was thinking of getting some Pepperpots anyways so that's cool.

Thanks guys

buy cheap - buy twice ;)

What is easier to fit, coilovers or springs?

coilovers

coilovers

if you buy top mounts too, that way you can remove your old struts complete and not need a spring compressor

Well, so far here's what I'm thinking:

- Coilovers

- Angel eyes (mates got a set he's wanting to sell)

- 9N3 tail lights (same mate selling those)

- OEM alloys if I can find some nice ones

- Metal plates (Mine are tatty)

- Bits of detailing work

Don't think much of that will even need declaring, not sure on the change of lights?

Only the coilovers you'll need to declare I think?

That's what I was thinking.

Not sure if I wan't the angel eyes, I'll check them out first. They're chrome and not black.

If they were black I would have definitely had them.

You need to declare EVERYTHING. Regardless how insignificant it is, this has been covered So many fucking times!

Also, OEM wheels may not incur an extra cost but they still wanna know.

I enquired about 6n2 SE wheels on a 6n, they weren't available as an option on that car in production so they put them down as aftermarket as the testing hadn't been done with them, although its basically the same test, and I understand exactly where they were coming from,y job involved a lot of vehicle testing and signing vehicles off for various production tests and stuff.

It does NO HARM phoning your insurance and saying "if I were to do this.......would I look at an increased premium" etc.

Not "I wanna declare my coilovers, oh i can't afford that Neverminddd"

Cost of mods should be the cost of the mod AND insurance difference.

Coilovers £150

Increase £50

Set £200 aside not £150 then worry about insurance later.

Who is your insurance with?

Good point actually, suppose I was being a bit bullheaded (or thick...) and not looking at it in that way.

no need to declare this mod

If you have a look on go compare & go into the declaring mods bit you will find that your even meant to declare wheels trims, decals/badges that show enhanced performance. What a pisstake !

Yer I just found out you ment 2 tell them about stickers but if you crash just pull them off quick n save the hassel :)

I'm with adrian flux and silly mods like stickers dont count on my policy iirc as its more based on power. as long as i dont go over 200bhp, alls good. everythings declared anyway tho.

not declaring things just gives your insurers an easy escape if you were to have an accident as they would make your policy void (i.e, you'd have no insurance!)

That's how it should be, how pathetic

Yeah but a sticker or badge that says "sport" or "16v" may make it more desirable to thieves increasing the chances of a break in/theft.

Increasing the chances of the insurer having to pay out.

I have the same as Jon apart from with Brentacre, even in my 6n a different coloured interior bulb was declared..it's like when people swap engines but don't change on logbook, isn't really legit even if insurance know, but that's another game

That's a strange question as I was Adrian flux with my 300bhp 200sx s13 I had bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, lowered, bigger wheels, exhaust all this didn't put it up but until I said about a performance chip they wanted an extra £300 i do think it's hit and miss who your with and what car you have :/ hope

That helps some how :/

I think it's all bullshit and a rip off no matter what, for example. doing insurance quotes online weather that be go compare or whatever, declaring anything increases your price even if it's putting on winter tyres in winter with snow!

And what's worse if you re-quote your self couple minutes later using the exact same information the price increases by couple pence over and over.
